Position Title: High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) Individual Placement
Position Summary:
The Mount Rainier National Park is recruiting three, 18-month (78 weeks, 3,120 Hours) individual placements. The individual placements will serve with Mount Rainier National Park and will pilot the High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) technology. Individual placements will work with Park staff to assist in updating trail information to be 50A compliant with information for mobility constraints (distance, grade, width, narrowest point, out slope, etc.) utilizing new technology. The goal is to capture information for all 279.79 miles of trail at Mt. Rainier National Park; collecting accessibility data; doing a full inventory of all trail features found at Mt. Rainier National Park (fences, bridges, rock wall, check steps, etc.); using GIS to analyze this data, and make it available to the public via the website. A GIS and policy development background is highly recommended.
About Northwest Youth Corps (NYC):
Northwest Youth Corps was created in 1984 to offer teenagers and young adults an education-based, work experience modeled after the historic Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. Today, we serve over 1,000 youth and young adults each year across a four-state region who restore critical habitat, build trails, lead volunteers, and educate youth and young adults to learn, grow and experience success.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Data collection/condition assessment using HETAP technology (50%)
- Data analysis to Trails GIS inventory provide accessibility data (50%)
Required Qualifications:
- Valid Driver's License required
- Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
- U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
- Must pass a background/driver check
- High school diploma/ GED
- Ability to work in all weather
- Ability to hike on uneven terrain over long distances with gear.
- Ability to work independently and on a team
Desired Qualifications:
- Background and experience with GIS and data analysis (education and/or work experience preferred)
- Backpacking Experience
- Policy development and communication skills
- Commitment to full 78 weeks of position (data collection, data analysis and policy development)
Duty Location:
Duties are performed within Mount Rainier National Park. (Duty station will be in Longmire or Tahoma Woods (nearest grocery store Graham/Puyallup – 40-minute drive, laundry on-site, etc.) Project will require frequent backcountry overnight stays.
Terms of Employment:
One individual placement will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May 2026 – December 2027 for a total of 18-months (78 weeks, 3,120 Hours). The individual placement will average 40 hours of labor per week, minus holidays. Individual placements are responsible for providing their own personal transportation and food. Housing may be provided.
This position is contingent upon the successful award and receipt of grant funding. Employment offers, start dates, and continuation of the role are dependent on the organization being awarded the grant and maintaining funding.
Program Benefits:
Individual placements will earn $56,160 living allowance, dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the 18-months (78 weeks, 3,120 Hours). The living allowance is taxable. This position is eligible for health insurance. A housing fund of $1,000 per month and a one-time $500 gear reimbursement will be provided.
