ABOUT OXBOW’s NATIVE PLANT NURSERY

Oxbow’s Native Plant Nursery (NPN) produces native plants that promote a conservation ethic. The plants produced in the nursery serve to increase habitat quantity and quality, while also acting as a vehicle for knowledge growth, empowering restoration project managers, landscape architects, and household and community gardeners to learn the importance of native plants and local landscapes. The NPN is recognized for its high-quality plants, development of native plant propagation protocols, and engagement in research to improve all aspects of nursery production.  The NPN grows approximately 70,000 plants per year.

POSITION OVERVIEW

As part of the NPN team, the Sales Lead drives native plant sales, customer outreach, and public engagement, and partners closely with the NPN Production team around inventory management and planning.  The ideal candidate will have a passion for conservation and gardening, and be skilled in nursery sales, business development, strategic planning and execution, managing stakeholders, and working as part of a collaborative team.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and develop external relationships and contacts to promote the NPN program, explore and expand partnership and sales opportunities, and support Oxbow’s efforts to increase regional knowledge about the importance of native plants.
  • Manage and coordinate sales inquiries to the NPN, inventory availability with the NPN Production team, pick-up/delivery of wholesale plant orders, and retail sale of native plants through Oxbow’s Farm Stand.
  • Drive discussions and planning for larger native plant installation projects, to raise awareness, visibility and appreciation for the beauty and role of native plants in local landscapes.
  • Develop a deep working knowledge of the native plant species grown at Oxbow, including their individual attributes and ideal growing conditions.
  • Partner with the NPN Production lead and Oxbow’s business development team to drive outreach and sales for the NPN, including storytelling/information sharing via Oxbow’s website and social media channels, collaborating with organizational partners to amplify Oxbow’s mission and offerings, and planning and implementing plant sales, workshops and other onsite and offsite programs and events to increase regional knowledge about the importance of native plants in local landscapes.
  • Participate in and support Oxbow public events on occasional weekend days.
  • Partner with the Director of Programs and the NPN Production lead to develop and systematize a more robust inventory management system for the NPN.
  • Support operational reporting relative to native plant sales, projections, and related planning.
  • Assist with nursery operations, as needed, to build knowledge and skill around native plants and Oxbow’s offerings.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of and affection for plants, preferably natives!
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in nursery sales, business management, or a related role in the horticulture, conservation, landscaping or natural resources fields.
  • Strong organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • A team player who focuses on developing a healthy and productive culture and is skilled at building trust and strong relationships.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact at all levels of an organization and to provide excellent customer service.
  • Patient, flexible, diplomatic, creative, resilient, pragmatic, with a sense of humor and an ability to stay grounded in diverse conditions and under pressure.
  • Able to perform physical work outdoors in the context of nursery operations.
  • Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings.
  • Fluent working in Microsoft suite (Office 365, Excel, Teams, Word, PowerPoint).

COMPENSATION

This is a regular, full-time position, with benefits that include 100% employer paid life insurance, healthcare, dental, and vision plans, retirement contribution match, and competitive paid time off. Additional benefit information is available upon request. The salary range is $$60,000-$70,000, depending on experience.
