GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for planning, organizing, developing & directing the overall operation of Natural Areas Management projects and general parks maintenance projects throughout the 18 Louisville Olmsted Parks and 6 Parkways.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Manage ecological restoration, enhancement, and preservation of natural areas, such as woodlands, trails, vistas, wetlands, ponds, and streams in Olmsted designed parks.
  • Design landscape plantings for the Olmsted Parks utilizing historic planting plans where applicable. 
  • Work with consultants to develop restoration plans and strategies.
  • Manage and direct daily operations of restoration staff (4-6 employees).
  • Develop and maintain training and qualification program for Restoration staff and enforce safety standards. 
  • Document restoration activities and monitoring through written reports, GIS mapping, GIS Online Collector, and digital photography.   
  • Manage herbicide training and compliance program.  Inventory and maintain all woodland management tools, equipment, and vehicles.  Develop and maintain maintenance logs for all equipment including vehicles.
  • Coordinate all plans and actions with Metro Parks; serve as an expert resource to Metro Parks.  Other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This work is performed partly in a business office setting at the Olmsted Center and partly in the field.  Field conditions can be very difficult at times working in the heat and humidity of the summer and extreme cold of the winter. Occasionally, the job duties necessitate the need to drive off-site in order to conduct field visits to gather information on operations, projects, services and activities. Field vehicles are supplied by the Conservancy.

EFFORT:

Must be able to see, hear and speak.  Work requires sitting for periods of time and working at a computer screen. Interaction with co-workers, board members, volunteers and outside consultants is a requirement.  Must be willing and able to work with detail.  Work can be very fast-paced and stressful.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT:

Computer, printer, fax machine, copy machine, telephone, camera, smart phones, and vehicles. Qualified candidate should also have experience with various hand tools used in restoration work and running power tools such as chain saws, brush cutters, hand augers, etc. Ideal candidate would have experience operating equipment such as skid steer, tractor, bush hog, auger for skid steer, backhoe, mini-excavator, large trucks and trailers as well as maintaining equipment. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in sciences such as natural science, ecology, biology, etc. with experience in project planning, problem solving, ecological research, employee supervision, restoration ecology, and restoration practices in an urban setting.

A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted when competency in the role is demonstrated.  Successful performance on pre-employment tests may be required.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

This position requires computer knowledge and skill.  Must be able to use business software packages, applications such as but not limited to Microsoft Office. Attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills are essential.  Must possess leadership ability and team building skills to effectively supervise staff. Experience with GIS, GPS, and data base management is essential.

Salary range: $50,000 -$65,000 depending on qualifications.
