Natural Areas Technician

Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Manually removes invasive plant species from Township parks, preserves, and pathways.
2. Maintains existing trails and constructs new trails.
3. Supports Scio Outside programming, and Township’s Parks, Preserves, and Pathways Community Engagement Program.
4. Maintains property cleanliness by picking up litter and emptying trash bins.
5. Conducts small-scale research project in relevant area (e.g., botany, birds, butterflies, bats) and contributes to ongoing research efforts.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to identify common SE Michigan invasive species.
- Previous teaching or community engagement experience.
- Valid Vehicle Operator’s License, satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain one throughout employment.
- Ability to obtain Michigan Pesticide License within 30 days of hire.
- Experience with the safe operation of hand tools (e.g., shovel, rake, pruners, loppers, hand saw, hoe, mattock) and power tools.
- Ability to safely operate a riding mower.
- Ability to conduct fieldwork with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, employee will be working outside in all temperatures and weather conditions.
Must be able to lift 30 lbs. and hike over undeveloped terrain for 3 miles. Work involves manual labor and using hand tools and power tools.
Weekend work may be required.
