Position Title: Natural Resource Stewardship AmeriCorps Member - 480 Hours

Position Summary: Bonneville Lock and Dam is recruiting two (2) 480-hour AmeriCorps members beginning June - September 2024. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is currently recruiting for a position that will support Natural Resource Management on U.S. Army Corps lands at the Bonneville Lock & Dam.

Duties and Responsibilities: Major duties are related to assisting personnel in recreation, natural resource management, and related activities at the Bonneville Lock & Dam. The member will assist in the following:

  • 40% natural resource maintenance and conservation projects (including invasive species removal).
  • 20% trails monitoring and vegetation management along 5 miles of trails.
  • 25% wildlife surveying from land, kayak, and/or vessel.
  • 10% interpretation and outreach.
  • 5% native plant establishment in support of the national pollinator initiatives.

Please note percentages describe the estimated time allocated to each task over the course of the internship. All work under this internship shall be performed in accordance with EM 385-1-1, "U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Safety and Health Requirements Manual," and FED-OSHA regulations. Required Qualifications:

  • Current Driver's License
  • Must be at least 18 years of age upon start date.
  • Willingness to submit to a government background check
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and a positive attitude
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings, in inclement weather, and on uneven ground.
  • Willingness to work independently in an outdoor setting
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Northwest natural resources and plants
  • Coursework in biology and strong interest in biology and conservation
  • Previous experience using GPS units and ArcView GIS
  • Must be comfortable riding in and working from a boat and/or kayak
  • Knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Word

Duty Location: Member will report daily to the Auditorium Building's Ranger office at Bonneville Lock & Dam (Interstate 84, Exit 40, Cascade Locks, Oregon 97014). Member must arrange their own transportation to and from the office. Public transportation opportunities are limited.

Terms of Employment: The AmeriCorps members will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting June through September 2024. (Dates of service are flexible to accommodate applicant availability.) The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits: $7,680 living allowance dispersed and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $1824.07.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check. These positions are sponsored by The Corps Network's OYSI and EAP program.
