Seasonal staff members are needed to assist with the City of Mentor’s white-tailed deer management program. Natural Resource Assistants will work closely with Natural Resource Specialists and the Mentor Police Department in completing deer culling duties. Seasonal employees must be able to work late evenings and weekends and complete physically strenuous work.  


The Natural Resource Assistant will be responsible for working outdoors at locations throughout the city, often in inclement weather. Proper clothing for any weather conditions is a must. Seasonal employees will be responsible for collecting and maintaining data throughout the duration of the deer program, as well as completing other deer culling activities, such as setting up tree stands, tagging deer, and transporting harvested animals.

After February, duties will consist of habitat restoration projects, avian monitoring, nuisance Canada Goose and House Sparrow control, invasive plant management, planning and implementation of environmental education programming, and various other natural resource related activities. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completed degree or currently enrolled student in wildlife management, natural resources, ecology, biology or a related field.
  • Must be physically able to lift and carry at least 40 lbs; Separately, must be able walk up to 7 miles a day in wet terrain.
  • Must be able tolerate inclement temperatures and cold weather for long periods of time.
  • Must be available to work nights and some weekends.
  • Ability to accurately collect and compile scientific data.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and ability to drive large trucks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using four-wheel drive equipment and trailers.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Excel to compile scientific data.
  • Knowledge of native and non-native herbaceous and woody plant species.
  • Experience using chainsaws, brush cutters, handsaws, hand tools, and best practice techniques in the application of herbicides.
  • Ability to identify and potentially handle migratory and resident bird species.
