Status: Temporary, Full-Time
Term: May to October with flexible start/end dates
Reports To: Natural Resources Manager

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
The Natural Resources Technician will assist the Natural Resources Manager with the development and implementation of the RPBCWD’s Data Collection program specific to wetland and soil health assessments of services provided.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Soil Health Program & Wetland Assessment Program (90%)

  • Assist in the development, coordination, and implementation of the RPBCWD’s Soil Health Program & Wetland Assessment Program.
  • Conducting field measurements of infiltration capacity using the Modified Phillip Dunne Infiltrometer.
  • Excavating soil observation pits to identify soil type, texture, color, and other characteristics.
  • Collecting, preparing, and transporting soil samples for laboratory assessment of various soil characteristics in accordance with the Cornell Soil Health Laboratory Comprehensive Assessment of Soil Health.
  • Assist with the functional assessments and inventory of all wetlands with the RPBCWD boundaries.
  • Assist Natural Resources Manager and consultants with the determination of wetland type and jurisdictional boundary as specified by the USACOE 1987 Manual and any supplements.
  • Use Trimble GPS unit to locate and record wetland boundaries and other appurtenant information.
  • Assist the GIS Communications Specialist and Natural Resources Manager with the development and maintenance of a soils health database.
  • Assisting the GIS Communications Specialist and Natural Resources Manager with the maintenance of the RPBCWD’s Wetland Database.

Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
Participates as a member of the staff team for District projects and programs by collaborating with other staff and consultants, performing miscellaneous office duties as needed, and assisting with special projects and other responsibilities as assigned. This includes assisting the water resources department with conducting RPBCWD's streams and lakes chemical, biological, and hydrological data monitoring following quality control protocols to ensure efficient and effective data collection.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A student who is currently enrolled or has recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the field of natural resources, ecology, soil sciences, water resources, biological studies, environmental science, limnology, hydrology, civil engineering, or related field
  • Course work or experience with soil science and/or monitoring
  • Course work or experience in wetland ecology and/or plant identification
  • Strong organizational, written, and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work well with a team and independently as needed
  • Must be proficient with MS Office Suite
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently without close supervision
  • Willingness to travel throughout the project area
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative attitude
  • Experience with statistical analysis of data
  • Knowledge of Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems software by ESRI
  • Ability to apply scientific data and research to local projects and programs

ACTIVITY AND FIELD WORK COMPONENTS:

  • This position requires a valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Ability to drive, maneuver/handle work pickup-trucks and use them for intended purposes
  • Ability to lift and carry approximately 25-50 pounds over uneven surfaces and slopes
  • Ability to walk, stand, crouch, kneel, and carry items over various terrains
  • Working outdoors under all weather conditions
  • Working in waters with waders
  • Ability to use/operate and maintain specialty tools/equipment
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
