The ideal candidate enjoys a mix of field work and office work, learning about a variety of natural resources-related topics, and engaging with a variety of people.

Current grant-funded projects include: Invasive Species; Agriculture Education; Native Plants; and Community Gardens. Other natural resource-related projects are possible if funding is identified. The Natural Resources Technician will assist with tasks including but not limited to planning, field implementation, data management, reporting, outreach, and education.

The Kodiak Soil and Water Conservation District (KSWCD) is a “quasi-state” entity; employees are hired by the Alaska Association of Conservation Districts, a 501c3 non-profit. A volunteer Board of Supervisors provides oversight to KSWCD activities.

Compensation:
Wage dependent on experience and project, $18-$21/hour. Full-time May through October and part-time November through April, but can be flexible and expanded to full-time if funds are available.

Responsibilities:

  • Invasive species outreach, education, surveys, monitoring, mapping, reporting, and control (manual removal and herbicide applications).
  • Outreach, education, and communication with agricultural producers and partners.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of the native plants program, including but not limited to outreach, garden construction, seed collection and cleaning, and ArcGIS mapping.
  • Collect and record biological field data.
  • Represent KSWCD to the public in a professional and positive manner.‍

Training:

  • First aid, bear safety, and aircraft safety training may be available.
  • Alaska Certified Pesticide Applicator training.
  • Driving a manual transmission vehicle.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with a variety of people and entities.
  • Must be 18 years or older with a valid driver’s license, good driving record, automobile insurance, and ability to pass a background check.
  • Flexible to work with a variety of funding sources, agency rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and/or overnight trips.
  • Competent computer skills (Excel, Word, and Internet applications).
  • Strong verbal, written, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of and interest in native and invasive species issues, agriculture, natural resource management, conservation planning, and land management issues.
  • Able to lift 40 pounds and hike rough terrain in remote locations in bear country.
  • Comfortable working in field situations under inclement conditions and closely with others in a small office.
  • Comfortable travelling on boats and in small aircraft such as float planes.
  • Experience or willing to learn to work with small watercraft such as inflatable boats and use of gas-powered tools such as a weed whacker.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, agricultural, a related field, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Plant identification skills; knowledge of Kodiak or Alaska’s flora is a plus.
  • Experience with using GIS is a plus.
