Located in scenic Harpswell, Maine, our nature day camp blends outdoor adventure, environmental education, creative arts, and hands-on exploration. Weekly themes include activities like forest hikes, tide pool investigations, wildlife tracking, nature crafts, and group games — all grounded in experiential learning.

Job Description

Along with a co-counselor, Nature Day Camp counselors are responsible for the health and safety of up to 16 campers as well as leading each day’s activities. Activities are all held outside and include a mix of physical, nature, arts, and imaginative activities.  

This is a seasonal position, 7.5 hour/day, 5-days-a-week, for seven weeks. The date range for this job is June 22nd – August 7th.

  • Ensure physical and emotional safety of all campers and follow camp safety policies.
  • Plan & facilitate games, hikes, environmental lessons, and creative projects.
  • Provide an enriching, engaging and fun camp experience.
  • Encourage curiosity, teamwork, and positive behavior.
  • Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all campers.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
  • Help create a welcoming, inclusive camp culture.
  • Collaborate with fellow counselors and camp leadership.
  • Participate in training sessions before the camp season begins.
  • Supervise volunteers.
  • Communicate with co-counselors, parents, and camp leadership about any issues that arise.
  • Debrief camp through written notes and meetings.

Requirements

  • Positive attitude
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Graduated High School by January 1, 2026
  • Experience working with children
  • Positive role model for minors
  • Patience, kindness, and enthusiasm
  • Demonstrated attention to safety
  • Flexibility and the ability to work well as part of a team
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification, or willingness to obtain before the start of camp
  • Be in good physical health that allows the performance of any of the following possible duties: hiking over rough terrain, carrying 25 lbs of equipment in a bag or backpack, performing emergency first aid and rescue skills outdoors in inclement weather in various terrains including in and around tidal areas.

Preferred

  • Experience teaching about nature.
  • Current or prior connection to Harpswell or the Maine coast.
  • Natural history knowledge.
  • 21 years of age, valid driver’s license & willingness to drive a 15 passenger van with campers.
