The San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA) is seeking a passionate and skilled Education Specialist to join our team in the North San Juan region. This is a unique opportunity to inspire a love for nature and stewardship of public lands among youth and community members across Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride, and Montrose.
About SJMA
SJMA empowers visitors and locals to explore, learn about, and protect the spectacular public lands of southwest Colorado. We partner with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and local communities to promote education, stewardship, and sustainable recreation.
Position Summary
The Education Specialist supports the design and delivery of hands-on, place-based outdoor education programs throughout the North San Juan region. This includes school-based lessons, field trips, and community events that connect participants of all ages to the environment. The position works closely with SJMA’s Education Team, partners, and volunteers to create meaningful learning experiences.
Position Details
- Classification: Regular Part-Time, Non-Exempt (approximately 20 hours/week)
- Compensation: $20–$25/hour, commensurate with experience
- Location: North San Juan region (Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride, Montrose)
- Reports To: North Region Program Coordinator
- Occasional evenings, weekends, and travel required
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engaging outdoor and classroom education programs for youth and adults.
- Collaborate with schools, partners, and agencies to develop curriculum and field experiences.
- Support seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns in program delivery.
- Maintain educational materials, equipment, and facilities.
- Participate in SJMA events, community outreach, and fundraising initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or related field (or within one semester of completion).
- Minimum two years of outdoor or science education experience.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Comfort working in variable outdoor conditions.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Wilderness First Aid or First Responder certification preferred.
- Spanish language skills a plus.
