Support multiple departments at NorthWoods Stewardship Center through forest stewardship, sustainable recreation, wildlife habitat, water quality improvement, and environmental education. The primary focus of the position will be to support the Conservation Science Department’s Riparian Lands Program through seed collection, processing, and distribution efforts for riparian restoration.
This position is a Half Time (915 hours) AmeriCorps position. NorthWoods can provide member housing at a reduced monthly rate.
The Northern Woods & Water Steward will:
- Support the direct seeding project by maintaining vigilance and quality with species identification, location, and data collection ensuring accurate records of data and activities.
- Count seeds accurately and use sensitive measuring equipment
- Engage with members of the public, including school students, in environmental education and presenting on NorthWoods Stewardship Center and the Riparian Lands program.
- Conduct post-program surveys to attendees to assess knowledge gained and change in behavior due to programming.
- Participate in an Independent Service Project under the guidance of VHCB AmeriCorps.
- Participate in all VHCB AmeriCorps Program Initiatives & outreach activities to promote AmeriCorps.
- Engage in professional and personal development activities and networking opportunities.
- Submit bi-weekly timesheets.
- Complete all enrollment and exit requirements.
NorthWoods is located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, which is a rural area. The NorthWoods campus has a bustling summer crowd of campus residents, which can be a fun group to hang out with and make it feel less isolated. The positions schedule will vary, but for the most part will consist of 35-40 hour weeks running Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend educational events may be requested. The Northern Woods & Waters Steward is expected to serve well with other team members, maintaining a respectful and professional relationship with other org members, the public, and project partners.
Service at NorthWoods is primarily in-person, with some remote service available in accordance with VHCB AmeriCorps’ teleservice policy. NorthWoods has on-site housing that is provided to our AmeriCorps member at a reduced monthly rate. NorthWoods provides a gear stipend that is pro-rated to the length of the member’s service term.
Position begins April 6 and ends October 2, 2026.
