Nursery, Restoration and Rare Plant Internship

Member will provide national service at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, a host site for the Nevada Conservation Corps AmeriCorps Program.

Position Summary:
Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an AmeriCorps Nursery, Restoration and Rare Plant Intern to learn about and participate on multiple projects at LMNRA. Work at the nursery includes working closely with the NPS nursery manager, NPS nursery technician, NPS volunteers, and 5-10 person youth conservation crews on nursery propagation projects. Ability to work as a team is required. Work can be repetitive and monotonous. Applicant must be able to follow detailed directions. Tasks at the nursery include, but are not limited to: soil mixing, transplanting, seed cleaning, seed collection, watering plants, weeding, pruning, culling pots, moving plants from greenhouses to outdoor compound, seeding, seed treatment, plant inventory, irrigation setup, irrigation checks and minor irrigation repair, cleaning pots, pest control including control of rodents, aphids, gnats, and other plant pests. The intern will also survey, document, assess, report and control non-native plants at Lake Mead and Lake Mohave to enhance visitor access and camping experience. Work will include identification of native and non-native plants of the desert southwest; control of non-native plants using mechanical and chemical methods; surveying for rare or unusual native plants to assist in site treatment prioritization; and leading 5-10 member work crews on weed control projects. The intern will use a GPS unit and camera to document weed presence and control actions performed. The intern will be responsible for data management including GIS, Access, and photo data. Intern may also assist with some planting projects. Other work in the field may include scouting out plant populations for seed collection. The intern will be required to operate a back country vehicle (training will be provided) and pass a federal background check. Other duties may consist of checking weather stations, picking-up trash, plant propagation, seed collection and prospecting and rare plant monitoring.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Rare and Non Native plant surveys;
• Exotic plant control;

• Assisting the nursery manager with facility maintenance;
• Work as part of team led by the nursery manager
• Intern will work with 5-10 member youth service groups and/or volunteers on nursery propagation projects
• Must be able to operate a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and pass a federal background check.
• Additional duties may include checking backcountry traffic counters, checking weather stations, picking-up trash, rare plant plot monitoring, restoring off-road tracks, repair backcountry barriers, installing backcountry signs, and other tasks associated with Mojave Desert restoration.

Compensation:

This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living stipend for the season in the amount of $9,360. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members every other week throughout the service term. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service, members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $2,960 that can be used for paying off qualified student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.

Timeline:

Qualifications:
• Experience with plant propagation ;
• Ability to learn about plant and seed care;
• Ability to identify native and non-native plants of the desert Southwest
• Experience with chemical and mechanical weed control methods
• Ability to drive 4x4 vehicle, and navigate in the backcountry using maps and GPS units
• Ability to use ArcGIS software such as ArcMap,
• Ability to use a GPS unit such as Garmin or ArcCollector App on iPhone
• Ability to use Microsoft Office Programs
• Ability to do physical labor in the backcountry
• Motivated to learn about the park’s resources
• Ability to communicate with park staff in an appropriate manner in written and verbal form
• Must pass a federal background check

Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.

Physical Demands:
• Lift up to 40 pounds of material or equipment
• Bend, lift, pull, and push
• Crouch, stoop, kneel, stand, or bend for long periods of time
• Walk for long periods of time on uneven surfaces carrying equipment
• Be outside in extreme heat or cold (depending upon the season)
• Work up to 10 hour days
• Travel overnight or up to 8 days to complete project work
