Position Announcement: Fisheries Tech II - Native Plant Nursery Technician

Position Location: Satellite office based in Prairie City, OR

The Tribal Native Plant Nursery operates under the Branch of Natural Resources with the mission to “propagate native plants of cultural and ecological importance for use in riparian restoration projects that aim to protect, manage, and enhance habitat that supports culturally significant fish populations for the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon.”

Description

This position works in the Native plant nursery, which produces up to 25,000 containerized plants per year for the purpose of riparian restoration across the John Day River Basin. This is done through a mixture of hardwood cuttings and seed propagation. This position is focused on assisting with the production and planting of these native plants. This includes, but is not limited to, seed collection, seed cleaning and storage, seed propagation, cutting collection and storage, cutting propagation, out-planting on project sites, ground maintenance, irrigation maintenance, and on the job trainings. Infrequently, applicant may be asked to assist monitoring or field crew with respective duties.

Work takes place mostly outside, but is ever changing depending on season, weather, and nursery needs. Applicant will be expected to work in inclement weather, stand and move for many hours, lift up to 20lbs, and be flexible in work flows with reasonable accommodations. Applicant will be expected to follow instructions and SOP's to the best of their ability. Applicant should be fine working in large groups or independently for any amount of time.

Required Qualifications

  • Applicant must have a valid driver's license, and be comfortable driving ATV/UTV/Work trucks
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test and a background check
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D. equivalent and be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to work in a team or independently in an outdoor setting in a safe and efficient manner
  • Basic computer skills, and an understanding of Office Suites
  • Basic understanding of plants and growing operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in native plant propagation and knowledge of Eastern Oregon riparian plants
  • A background in botany, plant ecology, restoration, horticulture, natural resources, or related fields
