Description: The Nursery Technician (I) is responsible for implementing nursery operations alongside the Nursery Grower Supervisor and other Nursery Technicians. The primary focus is on producing container plant material, including watering, seeding, transplanting, and performing plant care. This position will also assist in substrate nutrient applications, seed harvest, and maintaining sanitation protocols for the greenhouse. Nursery Technicians may also assist in community engagement activities through plant sales and environmental education programs.

Job Qualifications:

  • Detailed oriented, accurate, reliable, able to multitask, and a team player.
  • A passion for working with people and plants.
  • Able to work outdoors in unpredictable weather conditions; AND bend and crouch for long periods of time; AND lift 50+ lbs.
  • Clean driving record and a NV State driver’s license, or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire.
  • Competent in use of Microsoft programs.
  • Previous experience or willingness and ability to learn data systems and handheld devices.
  • Able to work in elevated greenhouse temperatures.
  • Able to work flexible hours including early morning start times.
  • Able to work weekends and/or holidays when needed.
  • Able to work overtime when required to finish a task or project that is time sensitive or to ensure the health of our plant materials.
  • Degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Botany, or Plant Science is preferred, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish communications are a plus for community engagement.

Expectations and Core Functions:

  • Responsible for assisting supervisors and managers with decision-making for plant material, including daily walks of greenhouses and implementing trials/experiments to evaluate possible improvements to propagation.
  • Responsible for assisting in all aspects of growing; including irrigating, fertilizing, soil drenching, testing, soil/media preparation, integrated pest management, seed harvest of mother stock, and other growing operations.
  • Monitor and control greenhouse environments.
  • Follow and suggest updates to SOPs.
  • Ensure facilities are operating properly and coordinate maintenance/repairs with supervisors and managers.
  • Collect insects for evaluation.
  • Follow company policies and practices while representing Walker Basin Conservancy in a reputable and business-like manner in all interactions with employees, visitors, governmental agencies, neighbors, customers, etc.
  • Ensure the security of confidential and proprietary information and materials.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Walker Basin Conservancy.
