Oklahoma Lesser Prairie-Chicken Survey

We are seeking several highly motivated and reliable seasonal field survey technicians for the 2026 Lesser Prairie-Chicken (LPC) breeding season.  The successful candidates will conduct LPC standardized surveys as assigned in northwestern Oklahoma, following established protocol.  This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable field experience, contributing directly to the conservation of a declining grassland species.

Job Description: The survey will be conducted in northwestern Oklahoma from 15 March 2026 through 7 May 2026.  All technicians are required to attend an orientation and training on both 13 & 14 March.  Work days per week vary depending on the weather.  As the weather allows, we will spend 4-6 hours per day doing surveys (listening and habitat evaluation surveys), and 1-2 hours per day on data entry.  We conduct a listening survey at specific times of dawn hours and continue onto a habitat evaluation survey after that.  Upon return from the field, collected data are entered into a survey database.  Wind or rain-delay days will be typical days off.

Qualifications: Must be able to work early mornings, tolerate cold weather, have a valid driver’s license, and operate 4WD vehicle.  Personal 4WD vehicle preferred but not required, and mileage would be reimbursed.  Must be flexible to work around weather conditions.  Excellent hearing, bird identification, detail orientation, and time management skills are essential.  Must be competent in reading maps and using GPS.  Must maintain regular and punctual communication with the supervising biologist throughout the season.

Requirements:  BS Degree in Wildlife Biology or equivalent, previous Lesser Prairie-Chicken or other avian survey experience preferred.

Salary: $900 per week.  Housing will be provided.
