Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) is a non-profit marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation hospital which also serves as a hub of marine science and education. We strive to provide world-class marine science education that inspires the next generation of scientists and ocean stewards.
We are looking for a dynamic and dedicated individual to join our education team in a full-time, permanent capacity. PMMC offers a great variety of educational programming to a wide range of audiences. We are looking for an enthusiastic team member who can help us take our programs to the next level.
We seek someone who can help expand our STEM/NGSS/Ocean Literacy-based ocean science activities through curriculum development and implementation. This person will have exceptional and engaging presentation skills, be extremely detail-oriented to keep up with extensive reservations responsibilities, be able to deliver both qualitative and quantitative analysis of our onsite educational programs, and have demonstrated experience recruiting, managing, and positively motivating a corp. of education volunteers. This position requires someone with a large amount of experience teaching elementary school children, as well as familiarity with teaching and developing programming for middle and high school students.
Specific responsibilities of this job include (but are not limited to):
Program reservations and administration
- Schedule all onsite education programs and volunteer teachers
- Maintain and send out the education program schedule to staff and volunteers
- Maintain, update, and improve the reservation system for onsite education programs
- Process program reservations and payments for onsite education programs
- Respond to program inquiries and correspondence with registrants
- Update & send out pre / post materials and evaluations for onsite education programs
- Compile monthly reports/analysis on bookings, revenue, surveys, and evaluations for onsite education programs
- Increase bookings by marketing programs via social media, email, and community resources
- Update onsite education program descriptions on PMMC’s website, in brochures, etc.
- Weekly review of onsite program quizzes/evaluations for all onsite programs: relay required teaching adjustments and program impact to staff and teachers
- Look for ways to increase program evaluation responses.
- Cultivate relationships with teachers, principals, schools, and school districts in OC.
- Maintains a relationship with the OC Girl Scout Council
- Keeps up with current trends in education/school system standards for the classroom
- Search for new technology to enhance programs
- Coordinate photos/video of onsite education programs for promotional materials
Development/Coordination of onsite education programs
- Coordinate all onsite education programs including:
- Camp, Teen & Tween Labs (June-Aug)
- Field Trips & Visitor Yard Tour
- Pinniped Pollution Project (free program for Title I schools)
- Scout programs
- Future weekend onsite programs (Science Saturdays, etc.)
- Maintain education classroom and storage areas
- Order, track, and maintain inventory of education program equipment and materials
- Help recruit and train a corps of volunteer teachers for onsite education programs
- Train volunteers, interns, and marine science educator staff to lead onsite programs
- Train, schedule, lead camp counselors, junior counselors, & teen lab instructors on summer programs
- Lead education programming in the absence of volunteer teachers
- Develop new program content and align with STEM, NGSS, and Ocean Literacy Principles
Miscellaneous responsibilities
- Assist with outreach and other education programming offsite or online as needed
- Routinely communicate progress/events to the department head
- Take initiative to further the success of the department/facility
- Represent PMMC at/participate in special PMMC events & fundraisers, including preparing for/working at the event
- Administration tasks and other duties as assigned by the department head
- Participate in animal care activities as requested
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in either marine science or early childhood development and education
- A minimum of 2 years of experience teaching large groups of elementary school aged children in an informal education setting
- Understanding of NGSS and Ocean Literacy Principle curriculum alignment
- Understanding of Microsoft: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sharepoint
- Strong, engaging, presentation skills (for an audience of children)
- Very strong organizational and written communication skills
- Reliable transportation
Preferred Additional Requirements:
- Knowledge of marine mammal life history
- Experience developing marine science curriculum
- Experience running summer camps for children 8-17 years of age
- Experience working with marine mammals
