Thanks for your interest in becoming a Discovery Instructor — one of the most rewarding roles at camp! Our instructors come from diverse educational and experiential backgrounds, working to provide hands-on learning for all ages in the field of outdoor education.

Each year, the Discovery Program serves more than 7,000 students from over 125 public, private, parochial, and charter schools, and adult professional development groups. Experiences are hands-on, age-appropriate, and tailored to a wide range of interests and abilities. Programs range from one-day visits to immersive five-day experiences. Discovery also offers professional development for educators and outdoor experiences for adults, including canoeing, horseback riding, and guided nature hikes.

The Discovery Instructor position at Camp Allen is a full-time seasonal position that runs the duration of the calendar school-year. Our season typically starts mid August and runs through to the end of May. This position requires long hours, extensive training, adaptability, patience, and a positive attitude every step of the way. 

As a Discovery Instructor, you’ll receive comprehensive on-site training in ropes course belaying, facilitation, archery, first-aid, and curriculum instruction to help you take on a variety of other responsibilities that support the Discovery Outdoor Education experience.

Requirements:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Have U.S. Work Authorization
• Have a bachelor's degree OR relevant experience working with youth/in an outdoor setting
• Flexibility to work outdoors in all weather conditions and adaptability for varied days
• Stamina and athleticism to manage long hours and physical tasks, including standing for extended periods, hiking, handling heavy equipment, high ropes facilitation, and back to back educational instruction.
• Comfort with heights and handling animals Though we do not require our instructors to climb or obtain L1 certification for our ropes course, it is a requirement to be willing to train on belaying and be willing to handle all ambassador animals, including reptiles, insects, and birds.
• A passion for working with children and the curiosity to explore and teach new things
• An open mind and a fun-loving attitude that creates a positive learning atmosphere

Compensation:

• Room + Board Private bedroom, shared living space, no cost utilities, on-site free meals.
• Free healthcare after 30 days of employment 
• Base pay: $375-$400 a week, plus $25/hr for any extra weekend or contract work

Start Date: Fall 2026 Flexible

End Date: May 28th, 2027
