Job Overview
The Outreach Coordinator supports the Outreach and Environmental Education Department by coordinating daily operations related to the Resource Center, outreach events, rescue dispatch support, and departmental training materials for the South Florida Wildlife Center (SFWC).
This role serves as a key point of contact for members of the public, wildlife rescuers, and internal staff by providing compassionate and knowledgeable customer service, facilitating patient admissions, coordinating wildlife rescue logistics, and supporting educational programming and community engagement efforts.
The Outreach Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining accurate records, assisting with ambassador animal programming support, and developing and updating departmental training resources and standard operating procedures to ensure consistency and efficiency across the department.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, adaptable, and passionate about wildlife conservation and public education, with the ability to remain calm and professional in fast-paced and emotionally sensitive situations.

Responsibilities and Duties
Resource Center & Patient Intake
- Receive and admit animals to the Center, gathering thorough historical information and ensuring accurate intake documentation.
- Support the triage team by communicating observations and determining urgency of admissions.
- Provide public education via phone, email, and in person regarding rescued or injured wildlife, admissions procedures, and appropriate courses of action.
- Assist in patient reunification and renesting efforts when appropriate.
- Coordinate approved wildlife transfers and facilitate adoption processes as needed.
- Maintain the admissions and retail areas in a clean, organized, and welcoming manner.
- Handle daily financial transactions and end-of-day reconciliation procedures.
Customer Service & Public Support
- Serve as a primary point of contact for community members, rescuers, volunteers, and guests.
- Ensure exemplary customer service while actively promoting SFWC’s mission, programs, and services.
- Respond to public inquiries in a compassionate, professional, and timely manner.
- Maintain and distribute educational and informational materials for visitors and callers.
- Identify opportunities to improve Resource Center workflows and visitor experience.
Rescue Coordination
- Dispatch volunteer rescue team members and coordinate wildlife rescue logistics.
- Communicate with rescuers regarding animal condition, transport timelines, and admission procedures.
- Assist in managing rescue requests and prioritizing urgent cases.
- Drive company vehicles for wildlife rescue or transport when necessary and approved.
- Maintain accurate rescue records and communications.
Outreach & Environmental Education Support
- Coordinate and support outreach programs, educational presentations, tours, and special events.
- Assist Outreach Specialists with preparation of educational materials, event logistics, and ambassador animal readiness.
- Represent SFWC at community events, educational programs, and public engagements as assigned.
- Help develop and improve educational programming and presentation materials.
- Gather content and support departmental storytelling efforts for outreach and promotional purposes.
- Assist with donor, guest, and volunteer tours of the facility.
Training Materials & Department Operations
- Develop, organize, and maintain departmental training materials, manuals, and onboarding resources.
- Update and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) and workflow documents to improve consistency and efficiency.
- Assist with implementation of departmental policies and procedural updates.
- Maintain educational and ambassador animal records in compliance with SFWC policies and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Maintain proficiency in all internal data tracking systems and ensure record accuracy.
- Generate reports, schedules, and documentation as requested.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities, including hurricane operations and emergency coverage.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and compassionate in emotionally sensitive or emergency situations.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management systems.
- Ability to quickly develop comprehensive knowledge of Florida wildlife species, habitats, and relevant state and federal regulations.
- Highly motivated, adaptable, and professional.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of staff, donor, and constituent matters.
- Ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds.
- Valid Florida driver’s license and insurable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in wildlife conservation, biology, environmental education, communications, or related field.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Experience in wildlife rehabilitation, animal care, or environmental education.
- Animal handling experience preferred.
Work Hours
SFWC operates 365 days per year; as such, staff will be scheduled to work weekends and holidays on a regular or recurring basis. Scheduled hours are typically 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with a one-hour unpaid lunch, with pre-approved overtime as necessary.
