The Institute for Wildlife Studies is seeking an Outreach Specialist to assist in hunter education regarding the use of non-lead ammunition. Lead causes serious to fatal health effects in condors, eagles and other wildlife that scavenge on carcasses shot with lead ammunition. The project will entail communicating with hunter groups, landowners and members of Tribal Nations to provide information regarding non-lead ammunition options and performance, as well as the effects of lead ammunition on wildlife. The selected applicant will help organize demonstrations at shooting ranges, attend periodic regional events to meet with sporting groups to discuss non-lead ammunition, and converse with ranchers and other landowners. They will also work closely with condor biologists and outreach personnel with other NGOs and as well as state and federal agencies. The job requires travel and the primary areas of work will be in northwestern California. This is currently planned as a 12-month position but may be extended based on funding.
Requirements: Applicants should have a strong background in hunting and knowledge of firearms and ammunition used for hunting. Experience using non-lead ammunition is a plus. The applicant should have well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to converse with stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds the ability to interpret scientific literature and then provide that information to non-professionals. Experience in public speaking is a plus. Applicants should have a B.S. degree in wildlife management or a related field. A criminal background check will be conducted on the successful applicant.
Compensation: Starting salary is $30/hour or approximately $60,000/year and includes medical, vacation, holidays, sick days and other benefits.
