Position description: Dr. Omera Matoo has an opening available for a Ph.D. student to begin for Spring 2027  in the Department of Biology at the University of South Dakota. The goal of this project is to investigate molecular, cellular and organismal responses of two freshwater mussel species to changes in water temperature and sedimentation regimes to better inform mussel conservation and management. The student will be trained in all aspects of proposed research (including experimental design, data collection and analyses) and mentorship. PI will work closely with them for training in scientific skill development including measuring whole-organism metabolic rates, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and biochemical assays (for determination of metabolic enzyme activities and redox assays). This is a part of a larger NSF funded project, in collaboration with Louisiana State University and University of Auburn.

Qualifications: Dr. Matoo is seeking someone who is creative, curious, motivated, and capable of working effectively both independently and in collaborative groups. An M.S degree in molecular ecology, ecophysiology, or organismal biology is required. This position doesnot involve field work. A proven track record of laboratory-based research in cell/molecular biology and physiology is required. Previous experience working with freshwater musses and/or marine bivalves is preferred. Strong communication (written and oral), quantitative, teamwork skills are essential, as is a desire to learn. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Completion of GRE is not required.

What to expect: There is opportunity to design lab-based studies, with funds existing to support, tuition, technical help, conference travel, and computing needs. The graduate student will be responsible for completion of a research project (planning, analysis, and writing), sharing results via conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications, and completion of coursework.

Stipend: An annual stipend of $23K and full tuition coverage for 4 years. Additional opportunities including Graduate Teaching Assistantship and Graduate Research Fellowships from the department also exist as needed.
