Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management is seeking Three Conservation and Plant Management Team Members to serve up to 34-35 weeks in the Carson City/Reno, Nevada area.

This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in natural resources and/or environmental management on our public lands.

Start Date: April 2020 (Start date Flexible for the right candidates)

End Date: December 18th, 2020

Project Location: Carson City District Office, Carson City, NV

As part of the Conservation and Plant Management Program, Interns will serve with the Carson City District Office area. This district area in western Nevada encompasses 5 million acres with a varied landscape made up of: coniferous forests of the Eastern Sierra Nevada; pinyon-juniper woodlands/sagebrush dominated areas; and salt desert shrub dominated areas.  Local ecosystems include:  high-altitude montane, sand dunes, alkali playas, meadows, and areas recovering from wildfire

Compensation:  The ACE Intern will complete 40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $500/week paid out biweekly for food and incidental costs. Housing is not provided. 

Public Land Corps Special Hiring Authority:
Interns serving under this agreement may be eligible for a special hiring authority upon completion of their internship. Qualifying interns who serve a "minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service on appropriate conservation projects as defined in the Public Lands Corps Act of 1993 and at least 120 hours were served on a project utilizing the Public Lands Corps legal authority." Eligible interns must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 30.

Position Description: Participants can expect to gain an appreciation for the complexity of managing public lands for multiple use.  Participants will gain exposure and experience in data collection, data analysis, document writing, monitoring techniques, plant identification, safety, and GIS.

  • Work as part of the Seeds of Success program to collect seeds from native plants within the Carson City District Office Area.
  • Locate areas with sufficient plants of the targeted species to make seed collections from.
  • Identify, collect, press and mount vegetation on herbarium sheets, to be used as voucher specimens for each of the species of interest.
  • Participate in the collection of seed from the species of interest.
  • Use GPS/GIS to map vegetation collection areas.
  • Participate in ongoing noxious weed mapping and treatment.
  • Participate in other conservation field work such as rare plant and habitat degradation monitoring.
  • Participate in volunteer events designed to increase public participation with public land stewardship.
  • Participate in the youth program designed to involve youth with outdoor educational activities.

Duties require outside work involving walking, bending, climbing hills, lifting and carrying various materials or supplies which are occasionally heavy. Use of a utility task vehicle will be routine. Remote field sites will likely require camping out at the site for a period of 1-3 nights, may be infrequent. During camping trips or while on any extended travel, alcohol or any controlled substance use is not permitted. Violation of this policy will result in immediate dismissal. Daily work shifts of 8 to 10 hours are anticipated within a 40-hour work week. The work week is Monday through Friday.  Occasional circumstances require adjusting the work week to accommodate special environmental education events which typically take place on Saturday. Time off will be granted.

Approximately 90 percent of the work is in the field. The fieldwork will involve driving and walking over rough and sandy terrain with wide variations in temperature ranging from below freezing in the fall and winter to above 90 degrees F during the summer.

Approximately 10 percent of the work is in the office. Office work involves the following: Using GIS to create maps and conduct analysis, visiting the University Herbarium to collect data on plant locations and to verify plant specimens, mounting pressed specimens on herbarium sheets and processing them into our herbarium, entering data into Access and Excel databases, processing seed collections and shipping to appropriate destination, conducting internet literature research on a variety of restoration topics, and creating documents and reports based on various projects.

Qualifications:  Applicants interested in pursuing a career in natural resource management, botany, or other related disciplines appropriate to the position. A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable. Resumes must contain enough information to show that the applicant meets the experience as defined in the internship announcement. Knowledge of Great Basin vegetation is a plus. Knowledge of procedures and seed collection techniques (training will be conducted during the internship).


  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Members must be 18-30 (Applicants between 31 and 35 may be considered based on veteran status
  • A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide such documentation; Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Team Members must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles);
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check;
  • Effective communication skills with all ages and diverse audiences;
  • Able and willing to work alone and in a group;
  • Able and willing to perform duties outdoors in varying weather conditions and capable of participating in sustained physical labor;
  • Be in good physical shape (capable of carrying a 50-pound pack for up to 2 miles).
  • Ability to operate independently and in remote areas; comfortable camping and traversing remote terrain
  • Able to complete agency computer, privacy, and records management training successfully;
  • Have a positive, flexible attitude.
  • Current DOI Background Check Clearance preferred

The intern must be willing to represent ACE and the BLM in a professional, positive and enthusiastic manner. Drug-use is prohibited and ACE and the BLM reserves the right to require drug-testing.
