The Sentry seeks a highly motivated and hard-working individual to join the organization as Policy Advisor or Senior Policy Advisor, Illegal Logging.  They will have a key role in designing and implementing a new thematic program on illegal logging which intends to disrupt and hold accountable transnational predatory networks that finance conflict, fund kleptocracies, and destroy the environment.  This includes contributing policy analysis and recommendations that reveal systemic challenges, provide scope for policy action, and advance The Sentry’s strategic objectives. This role is fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Investigator/Senior Investigator, Illegal Logging, design a multi-year Program Strategy which outlines thematic and/or country-specific lines of investigation and policy work.
  • Track ongoing developments with respect to applicable international, regional, and national environmental policy and legal frameworks.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on illegal logging and provide policy recommendations for investigative reports and alerts.
  • Write policy briefs, as well as contributing to external publications, such articles and op-eds.
  • Develop professional contacts and regularly engage with policymakers and governmental and intergovernmental authorities, particularly in the US, EU, and UK.
  • Function as the principal public-facing representative of the Illegal Logging program, including with television, radio, online, and print media.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6-10 years of experience, including at least 3-5 years related to policy analysis concerning illegal logging or other environmental crimes.
  • BA degree required, MA or other graduate degree preferred; ideally in environmental studies or possibly another relevant discipline such as law, public policy, or political science.
  • Expert knowledge of the timber trade, forestry regulations, and applicable international, regional, and national environmental legal frameworks.
  • Expert knowledge of targeted network sanctions, anti-money laundering mechanisms, and other tools of financial pressure.
  • Commitment to accountability for human rights violations and environmental crimes.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and policy analysis skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • English fluency required. Other languages relevant for potential case studies would be a plus.
