The Department of Anthropology and the Laboratories of Molecular Anthropology and Microbiome Research (LMAMR) at the University of Oklahoma invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the research group of Dr. Lilly Parker. This position is ideal for a researcher who enjoys balancing hands-on experimental work with data analysis, academic writing, and mentoring trainees, and who thrives in a collaborative research environment.

The successful candidate will contribute to research in evolutionary, conservation, and ancient/anthropological genomics. The initial work will focus primarily on cuscuses, including questions involving diversification, systematics, biogeography, conservation, and the evolutionary consequences of intentional translocations. The researcher will also have opportunities to contribute to projects involving shrews and other mammalian systems and to develop research questions that align with their interests.

LMAMR is an interdisciplinary research and training environment focused on the biocultural, ecological, and evolutionary dimensions of life. Researchers in the laboratories study biomolecules recovered from modern, forensic, historical, archaeological, and environmental materials. Our mission includes innovation in research and commitment to training in molecular and systems biology approaches, with a collaborative effort towards conservation, cultural respect, community engagement and outreach, both regional and international. Research in the Parker group examines how environmental change and human activities have shaped animal populations through time.

This is a combined wet-laboratory and computational position. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct wet-lab work, including work in the ancient DNA laboratory. Candidates must either have relevant laboratory experience or be willing and motivated to learn these methods. Training will be provided as needed.

Duties:

  • Conduct wet-lab and computational genomic research, with an initial focus on cuscuses
  • Generate and analyze genomic data from modern, museum, historical, archaeological, and other degraded biological materials
  • Work in LMAMR’s ancient DNA laboratory
  • Prepare manuscripts and contribute to collaborative publications
  • Mentor undergraduate, graduate, and visiting students
  • Collaborate with Dr. Parker, other LMAMR researchers, museum researchers, conservation partners, and project stakeholders
  • Develop grant proposals jointly with Dr. Parker and help shape new research directions
  • Participate in science communication and outreach
  • Travel for project meetings, sample collection, and conferences as needed 

Research Environment and Mentoring:

The postdoctoral researcher will be based in LMAMR at the University of Oklahoma in Norman and will have access to laboratory and computational resources for genomic research.

The postdoc will work closely with Dr. Parker in developing a mentoring plan tailored to their experience and career goals. Mentoring may include laboratory and computational training, manuscript development, student mentorship, grant writing, project development, and preparation for careers in academia, museums, conservation, government, or other research settings.

The position offers substantial opportunities for intellectual independence. Existing datasets and projects will support immediate research and publication, while the postdoctoral researcher will also be encouraged to help develop new projects and collaborative grant proposals.

Appointment:

This is a full-time postdoctoral appointment at the University of Oklahoma. Salary will be commensurate with experience and will include University benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory progress and the availability of funding.

The anticipated start date is flexible.

Qualifications

Education: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Life Sciences or Computer Science (preferably Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Ecology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, and/or Conservation Biology) or Anthropology with genomics experience.

Because the position includes both laboratory and computational research, applicants must be willing to conduct wet-lab work and have some experience with laboratory protocols (e.g. DNA extraction, QC procedures, and library preparation). Prior ancient-DNA experience is welcome but is not required. Applicants without this experience must be interested in learning relevant laboratory methods, including procedures for working with ancient and degraded DNA. Training will be provided as needed.

Competitive applicants will have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Strong background in bioinformatics workflows
  • Population, evolutionary, or conservation genomics
  • Analysis of high-throughput sequencing data
  • Linux or Unix computing environments
  • R, Python, or other computational tools
  • Molecular laboratory methods
  • Museum genomics, ancient DNA, degraded DNA, or low-coverage genomic data
  • Phylogenetics, phylogenomics, systematics, or biogeographic modeling
  • Mammalian evolutionary biology or conservation
  • High-performance computing

Candidates with complementary backgrounds who want to develop additional laboratory, genomic, computational, or museum-based research skills are strongly encouraged to apply.
