Position: Call-When-Needed Prescribed Burn Crew Member. Multiple independent contractor openings are available.
Location: North Carolina Coastal Plain (community of White Oak, NC). Private property in Bladen County, NC. The worksite is approximately 1.5 hours from Raleigh, 1.3 hours from Wilmington and 40 minutes from Fayetteville, NC.
Terms of employment:
- Engagements are expected to occur intermittently between January 2 and March 31, 2026, with possible additional work in April and May depending on weather and project needs.
- Compensation is provided at an hourly rate of $15 for services rendered on-site plus up to two hours of additional pay for those traveling more than two hours roundtrip. Contractors will submit invoices for work completed, typically every two weeks, and will be paid after invoice approval.
- Work may occur on weekends or weekdays, depending on burn opportunities. Contractors may accept or decline assignments as their schedules permit.

Position summary: Broadwell Brothers, LLC seeks qualified independent contractors to assist with prescribed burning and forest management operations during the 2026 winter/spring burn season.
- Work is conducted on a call-when-needed basis, depending on weather conditions and burn authorization windows. Engagements are coordinated by Fork Ridge Environmental Consulting.
- The Prescribed Burn Crew members will participate in the preparation and implementation of prescribed burns on the Bayfields property in Bladen County, NC. Additional forest management work to manage the Bayfields property and other tracts in eastern NC may also be needed. This work may include timber inventory data collection, vegetation trimming, timber stand improvement and boundary line maintenance.
- These are not employment positions. Contractors operate under their own discretion, provide their own equipment unless otherwise noted, and are responsible for their own taxes and insurance. A Form 1099-NEC will be issued to any contractor earning $600 or more in a calendar year.
Requirements:
- Due to the part-time nature of the work, only locally-based applicants (within a reasonable driving distance of ~ 1.5 hours away) are encouraged to apply.
- Ability to perform strenuous work
- 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to read a map
Desired qualifications:
- Previous prescribed fire or forestry field experience
- Experience assisting on a burn led by a qualified burn boss
- Completion of wildland fire training (e.g., S-130/S-190 or equivalent)
- Familiarity with North Carolina Coastal Plain ecosystems
- Ability to provide personal protective equipment (see Q&A section on page 4 of the downloadable job description) Limited safety gear may be available for use as needed.
Property overview: The Bayfields property is privately managed for wildlife habitat and the sustainable production of forest products. It contains diverse ecosystems including longleaf pine, pond pine, wet pine flatwoods, and bay forest habitats. The landscape supports prescribed fire management and the long-term conservation of native Coastal Plain species.
