Maine Audubon is hiring a paid Program Intern to join its dynamic team based in Holden, ME. Since 1843, Maine Audubon has worked to conserve Maine wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people in education, conservation, and action.

The Fields Pond Audubon Center has hosted a nature center and store, school programs, nature tours, community science, interpretation, and other environmental education and community engagement programs in the greater Bangor area for more than 25 years.

Position Overview
We are seeking a seasonal Program Intern to join our dynamic team based at our Fields Pond Center this spring and/or summer. The Program Intern will primarily help develop, deliver, and assist with youth, adult, and family, programs with a major emphasis on school children in grades K-5. These programs are designed to instill fascination, understanding, and responsibility for the natural world and focus on natural history, sustainability, and human impacts. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Must have an ability to communicate effectively with various age groups and audiences
  • Knowledge of Maine’s natural history and ecological concepts
  • Be working towards a degree in education, biology, or environmental studies
  • Responsible and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Have (or able to work towards) current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Assist with leadership of summer nature camp programs and special events
  • Skilled with basic computer software applications
  • Enthusiastic and flexible with a sense of humor
  • Able to pass a criminal background check

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds when setting up for programs or working on the property.
  • Able to frequently move on all trails on Fields Pond property as part of programing and stewardship.
  • Able to use hands/fingers to operate computer and other program equipment.
  • Able to work outdoors in challenging environmental conditions.

Timing, Compensation, and Benefits

  • This position can start anytime from April to June.
  • Part-time (flexible hours) in spring and full-time (40 hours) in the summer (starting mid-June).
  • Some flexibility on begin/end dates.
  • This position includes Maine Earned Time off, an annual membership to Maine Audubon, and discounts at our Nature Stores.
  • Compensation: $16/hour.
