Position: Programs and Communications Manager

Organization Description: York Land Trust (YLT) is a member-supported, nonprofit organization located in York, Maine, with more than 700 contributors. Our mission is to protect and care for significant natural lands and waterways in the greater York Maine area for the benefit of the community and the environment. We have protected roughly 4,000 acres, including more than 1,500 acres in eight public preserves that are open every day for free to the public. 

YLT operates out of a historic replica, Cape-style house that provides office and meeting space and a community room and garden for programs. Our headquarters is situated on a 27-acre preserve with public walking trails and organic garden. Learn more about us at www.yorklandtrust.org.  

Position Summary: York Land Trust is seeking a creative and energetic team member for the dynamic role of Programs and Communications Manager. This position will work to continue the department’s momentum in increasing York Land Trust’s visibility in and engagement with the community through thoughtful communications, interactive nature-based programs and outings, and meaningful volunteer opportunities. This position plays a leading role in identifying and implementing communications strategies and program opportunities to increase awareness of York Land Trust, broaden our audience, member, and volunteer base, and bolster our mission.  

Start Date: August 10, 2026 

Responsible to: Executive Director 

Supervisory Responsibility: Volunteers; Manage inter-departmental project teams as needed  

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Programs: 

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement outreach programs and events for the community, including nature-based educational workshops, garden programs, activities, hikes, outings, and citizen science initiatives for a large and varied audience. 
  • Support Executive Director in planning and executing successful community and fundraiser events. 
  • Develop and nurture established and new community partner relationships. 
  • Manage intake and oversight of outreach volunteers and coordinate volunteer opportunities.  
  • Lead the Outreach Committee in developing and assessing outreach programs and events. 

Communications 

  • Prepare, write, and help manage biannual printed newsletter and biannual e-newsletter. 
  • Build and manage email campaigns, including biweekly e-blast of upcoming programs and events. 
  • Help with development and creation of collateral such as educational resources, kiosks, trail maps, banners, infographics, flyers, signage, etc.  
  • Create and publish posts, stories, and events to social media channels.  
  • Update website with programs, events, newsletters, and land stories as needed. 
  • Enhance our digital media presence with photos and videos. 
  • Represent York Land Trust through tabling at events or making presentations as needed.  
  • Prepare press releases and publications as needed. 

Other: 

  • Help oversee care of our garden in collaboration with volunteers. 
  • Coordinate with Bullshirt for our online webstore for YLT merchandise. 
  • Help secure funding to support community outreach activities and programs. 
  • Maintain brand consistency and efficacy across channels and platforms. 
  • Participate in organization and team meetings. 
  • Collaborate with other departments with marketing, communications, or programmatic support as needed.  
  • Help develop and meet budget for contracted programs, outreach events, and marketing materials. 
  • Complete special projects and other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

  • Education and experience in program coordination, community building, marketing, communications, or a related field. 
  • Knowledge of and cares deeply about the natural world and environmental/conservation issues. 
  • Superb written and oral communication skills, relationship building, and public speaking ability. 
  • Comfort and skill in using Canva for graphic design needs. 
  • Demonstrated experience using WordPress, e-blast and social media platforms, database management, and Microsoft office applications. 
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan and implement programs and special events. 
  • Proven success leading and managing volunteers.  
  • Practical problem-solving and organizational skills with attention to detail and record-keeping.  
  • Motivated self-starter able to work independently and collaboratively as a team 
  • Grant proposal writing experience a plus. 

Compensation and Benefits: This is a salaried position with comprehensive benefits including health and dental insurance, vacation, holiday, sick time, and retirement benefits. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, with a starting salary of $54,080 per year.
