The Great Redwood Trail Agency is a public agency formed in 2022 as the successor agency to the North Coast Railroad Authority to develop and manage the Great Redwood Trail in Mendocino, Trinity, and Humboldt counties. We are looking for a Trail & Property Maintenance Technician to support and maintain GRTA's land holdings and trail segments, while collecting and managing field data. This position is located in a REMOTE office with frequent fieldwork in Trinity, Humboldt, and Trintiy counties.
Job Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs routine trail and property maintenance, including vegetation control, litter removal, and general upkeep.
- Operates and maintains hand tools and small-engine powered equipment (e.g., lawnmowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, drills, hammers, rakes).
- Cleans and services trail-related amenities such as restrooms, picnic areas, and signage.
- Removes graffiti and performs minor repairs to facilities, structures, and trail features.
- Collects and disposes of garbage and recyclables along trail corridors and GRTA property.
- Identifies, reports, and assists in mitigating hazards, vandalism, or safety issues.
- Assists in special projects such as habitat restoration, volunteer events, and capital improvements.
- Follows established safety procedures and participates in required training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of:
- Basic methods, tools, and materials used in groundskeeping, property maintenance, and custodial work.
- Safe operation of hand tools and small-engine powered equipment.
- Occupational hazards and safety practices related to outdoor and maintenance work.
- Ability to:
- Perform routine maintenance, custodial, and repair tasks.
- Operate and maintain tools and small equipment safely and effectively.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, contractors, volunteers, and the public.
- Perform physical labor outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
- Experience: One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping, custodial services, trail or park maintenance, facilities support, or related field preferred.
- License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying of materials and equipment.
- Exposure to dust, pollen, insects, and occasional contact with the public.
- Work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which will require following basic safety precautions.
- Must be able to readily commute to and physically access GRTA land holdings in Mendocino, Trinity and Humboldt counties.
- Dedicated office space from which to work remotely (computer and office equipment provided).
- Access to a personal vehicle for work-related travel, reimbursed at the Federal IRS rate.
Organization Environment:
- We are a small agency that operates remotely, with extensive fieldwork along the former Northwestern Pacific Railroad right-of-way in Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity counties. We have developed our management structure over the past year and now seek field support to form a strong organizational foundation from which to carry out the vision of the GRT. We work with two trail project managers from the State Coastal Conservancy, and a small team of internal staff and consultants who are knowledgeable, dedicated, and passionate. This position will help support the agency, working directly with staff and consultants across divisions.
Compensations & Benefits
- $31.25 - $38.46/hour, full-time 30 – 40 hours/week
- GRTA pays 100% of monthly dental and vision insurance premiums for full-time employees and a maximum of $50 per month for their dependents to be enrolled in coverage. The agency pays 75% of monthly dental and vision insurance premiums for part-time employees that work at least 20 hours per week.
- GRTA pays $1,000 per month toward medical insurance plans offered through CalPERS for full-time employees.
