Since 1981, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association has championed recreation in the Tahoe Basin. Today, the TRTA maintains and enhances a world-class 200-mile trail system with over half a million annual users. The organization implements a variety of programming to teach users sustainable trail use practices, connect the public with the outdoors to create lifelong stewards and mitigate the impacts of trail users on the trail and landscape so everyone can enjoy the Tahoe Rim Trail today and in the future.

POSITION SUMMARY Reporting Structure: This role reports to the Trail Operations Director. Location: Stateline, NV Job Classification: Temporary Full-time, non-exempt

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Trail Operations Director, Puncheon Construction Crew members will implement the Page Meadows Trail Restoration project on the Tahoe Rim Trail. This two-person crew will spend three months constructing 800ft of puncheon, working independently without direct supervision. Members of this team must have extensive experience constructing puncheons or boardwalks. As needed, crew members will lead volunteers and conservation corps crews working on puncheon construction. This position is scheduled from July 7, 2025 - October 2, 2025. Additional information on the Page Meadows project is attached.

Position Responsibilities

  • Contribute to a positive, safe, and productive work environment.
  • Perform trail maintenance projects utilizing various trail tools such as McLeods, Pulaskis, shovels, drills, miter saws, hammers, etc.
  • Construct and maintain the trail to TRTA/US Forest Service standards, including tread construction, drainage structures, and puncheons.
  • Maintaining and tracking trail-building tools, gear, vehicles, and equipment to ensure safe operations
  • Participate as a Crew Leader in volunteer workdays, providing technical and managerial skills as needed to ensure the success of projects to established standards
  • Provide photographs and videos of work in progress and completed
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must have experience constructing boardwalks and puncheons, with minimal direct supervision
  • Current first aid certification with CPR/AED, or receive certification before July 7, 2025
  • Past environmental education, outdoor leadership, or conservation experience
  • Experience with working in the backcountry and LNT skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team
  • A current driver’s license and clean driving record with no major infractions
  • Ability to pass a full background check

Additionally, preferred candidates will possess:

  • USFS Chainsaw certification
  • Advanced technical trail building skills
  • Wilderness First Aid or higher certification

Physical Demands

  • Ability to hike and camp in the backcountry for up to several days at a time at various elevations carrying up to 55 lbs
  • Ability to perform physical trail construction and maintenance tasks using a variety of trail tools, at times, in adverse conditions
  • Ability to work in the field for up to ten hours daily

Schedule and Location

The TRTA office is based out of Stateline, NV. The work site for the duration of this position will be Page Meadows, CA. The TRTA Trail Crew will work 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday. This project may require overnights in the field due to the remote nature of the work. In addition to being paid for hours worked at the project site, paid hours on overnight hitches will include travel time to and from worksites from the office/campsites each day. Time spent at camp on the crew member's own time is not paid.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly rate of $28.00-$32.00/hour depending on experience level.
