The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI), is recruiting Reforestation Crew Members to support post fire restoration in SEKI from the 2020 SQF and 2021 KNP complex fires. The incumbent will support mixed conifer plantings in high burn severity and low natural regeneration sections of the fire footprints occurring in designated wilderness and non-wilderness areas. They will work with National Park Service (NPS) staff to implement measures to restore vegetation community form and function following catastrophic wildfires. Work involves hiking and backpacking in the backcountry along with front country responsibilities. Work schedule will generally be 10-hour days with expectation to work overtime and on the weekends for multiple week-long or more hitches.
Technician Essential Job Functions may include the following:
- Supports SEKI planting projects by coordinating with project leads and contract planting crews on planting plan guidance, safety, logistics, inspections, and quality control.
- Conducts daily planter and unit inspections, including tracking updates (Avenza), packaging trees to prescription, moving trees and equipment from stock drop points, and planting trees when assigned.
- Collects effectiveness monitoring data, establishes and maintains monitoring plots, and supports additional restoration activities such as nursery or seed collection as needed.
- Operates in remote wilderness environments, including extended backcountry camping (up to seven nights) without formal facilities, while transporting time-sensitive equipment and communications between locations.
- Participates in required training covering project history, planting prescriptions, quality inspections, monitoring methods, wilderness first aid, data collection, and safe driving.
