Deep Portate Learning Center is an environemntal learning center in Hackensack, MN. Nestled on 6,307 acres of managed wilderness, we serve about 5,000 school aged students September-May with classes in outdoor education, recreation, conservation, ecology, etc. We are a sustainable campus that uses wind, solar, and biomass for energy. https://www.deep-portage.org/

PURPOSE OF JOB

The purpose of this position is to operate a sustainable wood heating and renewable energy system for an environmental education center, maintain snowshoe, XC skiing and hiking trails for students and public, maintain a safe campus and grounds, and assist with light campus maintenance. https://www.deep-portage.org/renewable-energy

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum level education: Associate’s Degree or higher
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented environment
• Excellent problem-solving, decision-making and prioritization skills.
• Comply with organization safety regulations and demonstrates personal safety awareness.
• Clear verbal communication skills
• Creative, flexible, and strong initiative
• An interest and commitment to lifelong learning
• Desire to maintain a healthy community and workplace
• Valid Driver’s License with clean record
• Preferred Experience
• Experience backing a trailer
• Experience using power tools such as chainsaws and brushcutters
• Experience operating ATVs, snowmobiles, or tractors

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to travel 5+ miles per day on uneven terrain
• Ability to work outside in all weather conditions (cold, snow, rain, heat, insects)
• Ability to repetitively lift up to 25 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift over 50 pounds
• The employee is regularly required to stand and walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach overhead with hands, arms and shoulders in all directions; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
• Noise level is usually moderate, but can be loud at times
• Safely operate vehicles, snowmobile, UTVs, tractor, chainsaws, hand tools, and any other related equipment for principal duties

Job Extras

• Pay is $14-16+/hr, depending on experience
• Meals provided when students on campus, and on campus housing may be provided
• Job starts no later than October 5 and ends no sooner than March 26. We will prioritize candidates who can work within this timeframe, but can be flexible starting before and ending after those dates as agreed upon. Work weeks are Tuesday-Saturday ~9am-5pm.
