Full-Time Restoration Technician: Borderlands Restoration Network (BRN) is seeking a full-time Restoration Technician to join our Watershed Restoration crew with a flexible start date of September 14th. This field-based role focuses on restoring degraded lands through a diverse range of watershed and ecosystem restoration practices. Responsibilities include surveying, construction of erosion control structures, ecological monitoring and data collection, non-chemical invasive plant management, and leading or assisting with volunteer opportunities, educational workshops, public presentations, and other community engagement activities that support BRN’s mission. 

This is an integrated field position, and day-to-day responsibilities vary based on seasonal priorities, project needs, and funding opportunities. Restoration technicians work collaboratively to improve watershed function, restore wildlife habitat, and build more resilient landscapes throughout the borderlands. 

Training will be provided, but we are seeking a motivated, adaptable, and quick learner with a passion for restoration and the ability to work well with others. Successful applicants must be comfortable occasionally camping overnight, working outdoors in rugged terrain and challenging weather conditions, operating hand and power tools (including chainsaws upon certification), and engaging with landowners, partners, and members of the public from diverse backgrounds. 

Location: This position is based out of Patagonia, AZ. The employee must be located in Patagonia or close enough to be physically in Patagonia throughout the work week and for some weekends.

Hours & Compensation: This position is full-time at 36 hours per week starting at $19.00/hr with potential for a higher rate based on experience level. Major Responsibilities

• Conduct field surveys to identify erosion and sedimentation issues
• Collect and document detailed field data to support restoration and monitoring efforts
• Construct low-tech wood and rock erosion control structures throughout Southern Arizona and Northern Mexico
• Camp overnight in remote areas as needed
• Assist with native outplanting and distribution of native seeds in restoration areas
• Lead or assist with educational workshops, volunteer events, public presentations, and community restoration activities. 
• Occasionally assist with native plant propagation, seed collection, and seed cleaning
• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and field equipment safely
• Safely operate BRN vehicles and UTVs while transporting personnel and equipment to project sites
• Perform other restoration, stewardship, and operational duties as assigned to support BRN’s mission

Required Qualifications

• Ability to hike at least 5 miles over uneven and rocky terrain while carrying field equipment
• Ability to safely operate hand tools for restoration work (rock hammers, pick mattocks, wheelbarrows, shovels, etc.)
• Commitment to safe work practices 
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and attention to detail
• Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience collecting field data using GPS units, tablets, and/or written notes
• Some experience in ecology, biology, conservation, land management, or related field 
• Familiarity with techniques used to perform habitat restoration (erosion control, invasive species management, and revegetation)
• Familiarity with plants of the Southwestern US
• Standard First Aid, CPR, and/or Red Card
• Bilingual in Spanish and English
• Experience working and communicating with individuals and groups from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
• Valid passport for occasional work in Mexico
