Restoration Specialist Job Announcement

Grassroots Ecology is a non-profit that engages and educates the community to restore local ecosystems in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Our strategies focus on habitat restoration, native plants, invasive plant control, creek and watershed stewardship, environmental education, and volunteer engagement. We are seeking a community-driven individual to help restore habitat and engage the community in East Palo Alto and Redwood City.


  • Be part of a team to support environmental conservation and educational activities at our restoration sites in East Palo Alto and Redwood City
  • Maintain restoration sites, such as weeding and watering 
  • Implement and refine restoration techniques for project sites (e.g. invasive weed removal, native plant installation and maintenance) 
  • Help organize and run volunteer workdays for a broad audience including: K-5 field trips, middle and high school service projects, college interns, and the greater community
  • Co-coordinate and lead our weekly after-school program for high schoolers at Stulsaft Park 
  • Create and deliver educational content and interpretive elements for students and volunteers 
  • Assist with monitoring and reporting on activities and progress 
  • Lead volunteer and educational events during the week and 2 or more Saturdays per month

Required Skills

  • Familiarity with the communities of East Palo Alto and Redwood City
  • Desire to work outside in variable weather conditions
  • Ability to engage and educate volunteers and community members
  • Available to work 2+ Saturdays per month 
  • Valid CA driver's license, and access to a personal vehicle at least 3 days per week to transport supplies
  • Intermediate computer skills and experience with Google Suite
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, walk on uneven terrain for long distances (up to 5 miles), and use hand tools
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and flexibility in order to accomplish a variety of tasks

Desired Skills

  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Tongan
  • Knowledge of CA native plants and ecology 
  • Experience providing education to youth and/or leading youth groups in an outdoor setting

Compensation: This is a full-time, entry-level, non-exempt position. Benefits include medical and dental, 403(b) plan with matching, generous vacation hours, and an annual professional development stipend. Hourly range is $20-$22/hour, depending on experience.
