The River Herring Monitoring Assistant plays a key role in processing and validating anadromous fish monitoring data used to support conservation and restoration planning across the state. Primary tasks include reviewing video monitoring footage using Salmonsoft, assisting with environmental DNA sample collection, performing quality control on species counts, and managing HOBO logger datasets. The Assistant will also contribute to synthesizing multi‑year monitoring results, communicating with partners, and supporting the development of strategies for future statewide monitoring improvements. This role directly supports science‑based management of river herring populations.

This part‑time, 12‑week seasonal position runs from March 23, 2026 through June 12, 2026, with flexible hours ranging from 10 to 21 hours per week. This position is structured as a hybrid role, with periodic in‑person fieldwork requirements and the option to work remotely for non‑field duties. This is an hourly position compensated at $20/hour. The Monitoring Assistant works closely with the Coastal Restoration Team and external partners, including MIT Sea Grant, academic researchers, and fish passage organizations.

What You’ll Bring:

• High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience             
• Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner
• Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. Driver’s License, First Aid, CPR).

Desired Qualifications

• Coursework or experience in Biology, Conservation, Environmental Studies, Marine Science, Fisheries, or a related field.
• Experience with data management, quality control, and/or environmental monitoring.
• Familiarity with R or other programming languages used in ecological data analysis.
• Familiarity with Salmonsoft and/or HOBOWare software
• Understanding of freshwater or anadromous fish ecology, fish passage, and river systems.
• Experience with scientific data entry, video review, or lab‑based workflows.
• Ability to communicate clearly with cross‑disciplinary partners, researchers, and nonprofit groups.
• Interest in developing professional skills in restoration science, fisheries monitoring, or conservation planning.
• Multi‑lingual or cross‑cultural experience appreciated.
• Ability to interact with the public in a friendly, professional manner.

Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $20.00 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
