Description: Sanctuary Animal Caretakers are responsible for providing the highest quality of care for a wide variety of native Texas and non-native avian, mammal, and reptile species, in addition to domesticated farmed and companion animals. A caretaker can expect to work 40-50 hours per week, depending on the season, and hours will include day and evening shifts, weekends, and holidays. Tasks will include daily animal care, health monitoring, habitat maintenance and record keeping.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Animal care: Tend to animals, including feeding, watering, and providing basic healthcare.
2. Property maintenance: Repair and maintain fences (including electric), buildings, enclosures, and roads. This also includes general groundskeeping duties such as mowing, landscaping, and weed control.
3. Equipment operation and maintenance: Operate and maintain various farm machinery and tools, including tractors, mowers, chainsaws, and irrigation systems. Basic mechanical skills are often required for servicing and repairing equipment.
4. General work activities: Perform tasks such as moving and baling hay, cutting trees, and assisting with various projects as directed by supervisors.
Requirements:
1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a two or four-year degree in Animal Science, Zoology or Biology is a major plus.
2. 2 years of full-time animal care experience preferred, with exposure to native and non-native Texas wildlife, and domesticated species a plus
3. Physical stamina and strength, with the ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor for extended periods; mature individuals with the ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful situations, a demanding workload, long hours, and to work independently or as a team.
4. Applicants should possess a strong personal work ethic, positive attitude, and have a high level of integrity.
5. Applicants must be dependable and willing to learn and do what is needed so that the animals are given the best quality of life possible, whether that is in the wild or in our sanctuary.
6. Meningitis, Tetanus and rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are required during the first several months of employment
7. Good driving record
