Position Title: Forestry Interpretive Ranger Individual Placement – 960 Hour
Position Summary:
Sawtooth National Forest is recruiting two, 960-hour (24-weeks) Individual Placements beginning May/June 2026, through October/November 2026. The individual placements will lead interpretive programs that engage community members and visitors with forest health and fire safety topics. The individual placements will assist with forest visitor services including the distribution of information about the forest and permits. This includes answering questions by phone, in person, and/or email about general information, rules and regulations, permits, passes and selling firewood permits and bookstore items. This will also include opening and closing of the Ranger Station completing sales for the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association bookstore including books, maps, and firewood permits. This can also include the opportunity to write and give an interpretive program at the Ranger Stations and/or Campgrounds about forest health and fire safety topics and assist with Farmer's Markets and community events to provide general Forest Service information, forest health and fire safety topics. There are also opportunities for occasional field days with the Sawtooth National Forest's forestry crew to aid with cone collection and reforestation activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific activities include:
- 70% of work will be visitor services focused within forest service offices
- 30% of work will be interpretive focused at forest service offices, campgrounds, and community events
Required Qualifications:
- Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
- U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
- Must pass a background/driver check
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Current driver's license
- Willingness to work as part of a small team
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Good organizational skills
- A positive attitude
- Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
Desired Qualifications:
- Math skills (fractions, basic algebra, basic trigonometry)
- Cash handling skills
- Good customer service skills
- Familiarity with the Sawtooth National Forest and its infrastructure (or willingness to learn)
- Understanding of protocols regarding press releases and wildfire communication (or willingness to learn)
- Personal transportation
- Attention to detail.
- Familiarity with tree identification and natural environment in the Rocky Mountains
Duty Location:
Duties are performed within the Sawtooth National Forest Duty Station in Ketchum, Idaho and housing is provided. Ketchum has a gas station, grocery store, a hospital, and restaurants.
Terms of Employment:
One individual placement will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May/June 2026, through October/November 2026, for a total of 24 Weeks. The individual placement will average 40 hours of labor per week, minus holidays. Individual placements are responsible for providing their own personal transportation and food. Housing will be provided.
Program Benefits:
Individual placements will earn $15,360 living allowance, dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the 24 weeks. Housing will be provided. This position will include reimbursement funding for relevant travel and/or training. The living allowance is taxable.
