Science Communications Summer 2026 Internship:

Summary:

Learn about nonprofit and science communications strategies through hands-on experience as part of the Alaska SeaLife Center’s Advancement team.

Under the guidance of the Media & Communications Manager, this position offers a rare opportunity to help share the stories of ASLC scientists working directly with marine wildlife in Alaska, and will assist in translating research, fieldwork, and conservation into meaningful narratives that connect people to the work being done by ASLC’s research teams. The intern will use photography, videography, writing, editing, graphic design, archiving, social media content creation, and more to help share science stories, while building practical experience in overarching nonprofit communications strategies.

This is a full-time, unpaid seasonal internship with housing provided in Seward, Alaska, designed to offer immersive, professional experience in science communications.

Education/Training Requirements:

Applicants must be college graduates or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with a background or coursework in a related field.

Candidates must submit a portfolio of their work  (video, photography, social media content, writing sample, graphic designs or a combination of all) with their application and resume for full consideration. Essential Duties:

  • Assist with and have opportunities to lead science communication initiatives by collaborating respectfully with ASLC research teams to translate scientific work into engaging, mission-aligned communications, including photo stories, videos, blogs, press releases, and more. 
  • Show interest and basic understanding of scientific research, including ASLC projects such as remote video monitoring of a Steller sea lion rookery, seabird boat surveys, ice seal physiology and health studies, veterinary medicine, and other ASLC research efforts.
  • Demonstrate initiative and curiosity by proactively identifying opportunities to tell science and conservation stories across ASLC programs.
  • Assisting with field research opportunities may be available following appropriate training and safety protocols based on the intern’s comfort and interest, including potential fieldwork in the Gulf of Alaska with ASLC’s research teams.
  • Fulfill general photography and videography assignments by shooting with professional DSLR or mirrorless cameras (provided by ASLC), editing the content using tools like Lightroom and Photoshop, and archiving for future use.
  • Assist with social media content creation, editing (including mobile app editing), distribution, and monitoring for ASLC social media platforms.
  • Assist with ongoing historical photo and video archiving and editing.
  • Collaborate on developing seasonal marketing campaigns, including graphic designs, social media posts, and advertising.
  • Contribute to writing and proofreading for publications, campaigns, and website updates.
  • Occasionally represent ASLC within the community through outreach, event promotion, and sales and guest services functions, including special events, facility rentals, group tours, and other community engagement activities consistent with Advancement department operations.
  • Foster positive relationships with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff by promoting cooperation, professionalism, and high standards as a member of the Advancement team, which oversees development and communications.
  • Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures and programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to speak effectively and to be comfortable meeting new people when interfacing with guests.  Ability to work independently with excellent organizational and time management skills. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite programs (such as Lightroom and Photoshop) and video editing software is highly preferred.
