Scientific Aide: Foothill Yellow-Legged Frog Conservation

Are you interested in being part of a field crew working on native species conservation? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Sierra Fisheries team is seeking two motivated individuals to work as Scientific Aides in the North Central Region office located in Rancho Cordova, CA.

Work Duties: Monitor Foothill Yellow-legged Frog populations to assess impacts of flow regime and wildfire using visual encounter and capture-mark-recapture surveys, dataloggers, and trail cameras. Study sites are in the Sierra Nevada foothills and northern coast ranges. Successful applicants:

  • Follow standardized aquatic survey protocols for amphibian recovery and monitoring
  • Record data clearly and comprehensively
  • Coordinate with project lead to ensure complete and timely project implementation
  • Enter data into computer systems and assist with analysis using Microsoft Office and GIS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to completion of two years of college with a minimum of 10 semester hours in biological or chemistry sciences. (Undergraduate degree in biological sciences preferred) 

OR

  • One year of experience in surveying, studying, or evaluating fish or wildlife populations; or working in a scientific laboratory.

Desired Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of California herpetofauna, particularly ranid species
  • Experience conducting field surveys and comfort working in riparian habitats
  • Knowledge of scientific nomenclature and general scientific research principles.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, threatened and endangered species

Physical Demands: Field work involves hiking with a heavy backpack over rugged terrain, both on trail and off trail. There is potential for exposure to all types of weather, slippery rocks, insects, poison oak, rough or fast-moving water, and cold water.

Schedule: 40-hour work week (Mon- Thurs, 10 hrs./day) depending on weather & workload. Mostly day trips with some overnight camping trips. 

Work Supplies: Camping gear and per diem provided for overnight travel
