Organizational Overview:
Bluff Lake Nature Center (BLNC) is a nonprofit urban wildlife refuge located in Denver, Colorado. BLNC educates individuals to be engaged, resilient, and curious; conserves a natural area in the city; furthers equity in outdoor access; and nurtures the health and well-being of communities and ecosystems. Our Education Team works with over 13,000 people from diverse backgrounds each year through field trips, forest preschool, summer camp, and family programs. Our Refuge Management Team manages our 123-acre site (which contains wetlands, prairie, and riparian habitats) through site restoration, volunteer projects, and habitat monitoring. On average, BLNC sees over 100,000 visitors per year.
General Summary of Position:
The Bilingual Environmental Educator is a seasonal part-time position that works within our Education Team to facilitate field trips, table at community outreach events, substitute for Bluff Lake’s Forest School program and summer camp, and support other programs as needed.
Field Trips (50%)
Field Trips are led year-round. Field trips are offered to schools on Tuesdays thru Fridays, with pre visit outreach trips occurring on Monday. Field Trip topics include water quality, habitats, biodiversity, prairie dogs, and outdoor survival. Field trips are typically 2.5 hours long, and entirely outdoors. The curriculum is pre-determined.
Community Outreach (30%)
Community outreach events are typically hosted by partner organizations. These are opportunities to connect with individuals, share about our programs, and engage them in passive activities. There is opportunity to utilize creativity through panning passive activities.
Summer Camp + Forest School (20%)
Summer Camp inspires campers to better understand and appreciate the outdoors through a blend of weekly environmental topics, nature exploration, animal encounters, hands-on lessons, games, crafts, and free creek play. This program lasts for 10 weeks during the summer, with roughly 56 campers and junior counselors coming to Bluff Lake daily. Camp is held 9am-3pm entirely outdoors.
Bluff Lake Forest School is inspired by the European Forest School philosophy. Unlike a traditional preschool, Bluff Lake Forest School operates exclusively outdoors where children (ages 3-7) learn in and from the natural environment. Educators are present to facilitate children’s learning, which is guided by their own experiences and interests. Bluff Lake Forest School focuses on pre-academic skill development including critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and building social and emotional competence. Our educators provide high-quality, meaningful learning experiences that meet children’s developmental needs, while fostering their natural curiosity and scaffolding the children’s learning. Bluff Lake Forest School allows children the space and freedom to examine their own interests, while supporting each child’s development. We model appropriate behavior and language, ask questions, and are there for the children for whatever they might need.
