Summary:
● 35-40 hours per week
● This position is a public education position that also includes general maintenance of the Blue Ocean Discovery Center building and exhibits.
● This position is ideal for individuals with experience in environmental education or marine biology who are comfortable in a supervisory position.
General Responsibilities:
Blue Ocean Discovery Center Responsibilities (95% of Job)
● Teach guests about Gulf of Maine species, environmental issues, and solutions.
● Facilitate proper animal handling and respectful behavior at the touch tank
● Animal care duties, such as tank cleaning and feeding.
● Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the Blue Ocean Discovery Center (BODC) exhibits and staff space
● Work as a member of the BODC team
● Serve as team leader for educators and volunteers
● Collect admission
● Manage and report daily admissions and donations
● Assist in beach cleanups as needed and pass out supplies to visitors.
● Open the Blue Ocean Discovery Center on time each morning and secure the center at night.
● Ensure the team works together to achieve all daily tasks.
● Take photos and videos daily for social media and upload to Google Drive.
● Make sure all supplies are stocked and report when supplies are low.
● Other tasks, as assigned by the Education Coordinator
Blue Ocean Society Responsibilities (5% of job)
● Assist with outreach education programs, including Ladder the Inflatable Whale as needed
● Assist with leading beach cleanups along the seacoast as needed
● Take photos and film content for the social media team
Qualifications:
● Experience working with the public and/or children
● Must be at least 18 years of age and have reliable transportation
● Must have taken at least basic biology courses; marine biology courses are a plus.
● Familiarity with Gulf of Maine marine species, marine mammals, and intertidal organisms
● Excellent oral communication skills
● Ability to follow specific instructions
● Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
● Must be enthusiastic, flexible, self-motivated, and with a positive attitude
Schedule Requirements:
● Must be available from Memorial Day Weekend through the end of August. Preference is given to those who can work until Labor Day Weekend.
● Must attend pre-season training in May
● Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.
● Staff will be scheduled during the hours of 8 AM-6 PM, with hours available Sunday through Saturday. Staff may rotate between the Blue Ocean Discovery Center and off-site outreach programs.
Physical Requirements
● It may be necessary to lift and move supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
● Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
● Ability to handle animals submerged in water after staff training.
Payment and Benefits:
● Hourly rate of $17-$18 per hour based on experience
● Free parking is provided in the South Hampton Campground Parking lot during shifts only.
● Ability to attend the weekly internship program and professional development seminars
