Seasonal Field Technician(s)

Job Type Temporary
Salary $6,000 base pay + $4,500 travel stipend (for lodging and meals) + mileage compensation for personal vehicle.
Min. Experience 2 - 4 years

Tangled Bank Conservation, in partnership with Pheasants Forever and as part of the USDA's Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) initiative, is seeking two Seasonal Field Technicians to support the development and validation of new standardized aquatic monitoring protocols. These protocols will be used to evaluate conservation outcomes under the Southern Waters Framework (SWF), a large-scale initiative focused on improving aquatic habitat connectivity, biodiversity, and climate resilience across the eastern and central United States.

Field Technicians will conduct aquatic biodiversity monitoring across multiple states, collecting environmental DNA (eDNA) samples and aquatic macroinvertebrate samples from designated watersheds. The data collected through this project will contribute to the development of efficient, scalable monitoring approaches that improve our ability to measure the impacts of conservation practices on aquatic ecosystems.

Technicians will work in teams of two and will be responsible for independently implementing field protocols, managing sampling schedules, and coordinating day-to-day logistics throughout the field season. Protocols and training will be provided virtually at the beginning of the field season. Following training, each field team will be responsible for independently planning and carrying out their assigned sampling route, booking their own lodging, and managing day-to-day field logistics. Teams will be provided with all necessary equipment, coordinates for assigned sampling sites, and detailed project protocols. Project staff will remain available throughout the field season to answer questions, troubleshoot issues, and provide remote support as needed.

The work involves extensive travel across multiple states, and technicians should expect to remain on the road for most if not all of the 2-3 month field season. This position is best suited for experienced field technicians who enjoy independent work, solving problems in the field, extensive travel, and taking ownership of day-to-day field operations.

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with emerging aquatic monitoring technologies and contribute to a large-scale conservation initiative designed to improve how conservation outcomes are measured across working landscapes.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect eDNA samples and aquatic invertebrate samples using a benthic sampler.
  • Assess field sites to determine whether conditions are suitable for sampling. When pre-selected sites are unsuitable or inaccessible, identify and document appropriate replacement sites in accordance with project protocols.
  • Plan and execute an efficient sampling schedule to complete assigned watersheds within project timelines.
  • Properly filter, store, and ship collected samples to Tangled Bank Conservation laboratory and other partners.
  • Collect and record field data accurately and systematically.
  • Collaborate closely with another field technician in teams of two, ensuring effective communication and cooperation.
  • Participate in virtual training sessions on eDNA and macroinvertebrate sampling techniques.
  • Maintain regular communication with project staff regarding progress and any field issues that arise.

Requirements:

  • Each team will require one person to be willing to use their personal vehicle for field work. Mileage compensation will be provided to the driver of their personal vehicle. Vehicles with larger storage capacity and 4WD/AWD capabilities are preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage field work, daily logistics, and scheduling while maintaining communication with remote project staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Experience with field work and data collection, particularly in aquatic environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain).
  • Willingness to travel extensively, potentially for up to 2-3 months at a time, across multiple states in the project area.
  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing schedule and different field sites.
  • Comfortable working in teams of two, with the ability to collaborate closely with one other person for extended periods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective communication and cooperation with a single team member during potentially challenging conditions.
  • Ability to accurately record, organize, and report on field data.
  • Basic understanding of GPS and mapping tools for site navigation and data collection.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written protocols.

Position Details:

  • Seasonal contractor for 2-3 months beginning in August or September 2026.
  • All sampling gear will be provided by Tangled Bank Conservation. Contractor will be responsible for providing their own waders or other personal field equipment. Sampling gear will be returned to Tangled Bank Conservation at the end of the field season, either via shipping or by dropping off in Asheville, NC.
  • Contractors will be responsible for arranging their own lodging throughout the field season using the provided travel stipend.

Compensation:

Compensation includes $6,000 in base pay and a $4,500 stipend intended to help cover lodging and meal expenses during the field season. The team member who will be using their personal vehicle and driving will receive additional mileage compensation. The lodging and meal stipend is provided as a fixed payment and is not subject to reimbursement documentation.
