Seasonal Invasive Plant Technician (Elko, Nevada)

Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition and Elko District Bureau of Land Management

Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition (ENLC) is a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the restoration of Western ecosystems through collaborative teamwork with public, private, and non-profit partners.  ENLC, based in Ely, Nevada, is hiring two Invasive Plant Technicians for the 2021 field season (May-September).  Technicians will work with the Elko District Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Invasive Plant Management team to inventory and treat invasive plants on Elko District BLM lands in northeastern Nevada.  Technicians will be based out of the Elko BLM office and under BLM staff supervision.

Invasive Plant Technician Duties:

Inventory duties include surveying BLM rangelands for invasive plant species and infestations.  Technicians will verify species identification and record environmental and geographic attributes of the infestation in the field.  Technicians will process data in the BLM office to be used later for locating and applying control methods that may involve hand pulling, hand tools, power tools, and herbicide. All technicians will be responsible for driving (including all-terrain vehicles) and hiking to inventory/treatment sites. Technicians must be physically able to hike while wearing a 40-lb backpack sprayer over difficult terrain and spend long days working outside in high desert weather conditions.  Technicians will be required to attend comprehensive job trainings provided by the BLM and ENLC at the beginning of the season.

Education and Experience:

Qualified applicants should have entry-level job experience and/or education in invasive plant management, natural resources, biological or agricultural sciences. Preferred qualifications include knowledge and/or experience in plant identification and vegetation management, and most importantly, ability to follow directions and safety protocols, and work well with others. Applicants must be experienced driving 4WD vehicles on unpaved roads and should have a clean driving record for the past 3 years. Experience using handheld electronic equipment such as GPS units, operating UTVs, and trailer towing is recommended.

Technicians will work four (4) 10-hour days with three (3) days off.  Crews will generally return to Elko each evening. Camping for a four-day period may be required during the field season if working in a remote location.

  • $15.50 -$16.00 depending on experience
  • $38/night per diem when camping
