East Fork State Fish Hatchery, located in Montgomery, Indiana (Southwestern Indiana), is in search of 2 seasonal hatchery technicians to assist in the day-to-day operations of Indiana DNR’s largest state operated cool and warm water fish hatchery. The hatchery has both outdoor pond culture and indoor tank culture for fish production. Fish species reared at this facility include walleye, hybrid walleye (saugeye), striped bass, hybrid striped bass (sunshine bass), muskellunge, channel catfish, fathead minnows, and rainbow trout. PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: As early as April 2026 through fall/early winter 2026.
SCHEDULE: 5 days a week and 7.5 hours/day (plus a half hour unpaid lunch break). Hours are generally 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM EST, however times may vary during fish harvest and stocking. If working the weekend shift you will be given 2 days off during the week.
DUTIES: This position combines labor and technical functions into all phases of fish culture. Assist hatchery staff in the daily care and rearing of a variety of fish species that will be stocked into Indiana’s public waters.
Most of this position’s time will be spent working with the day-to-day extensive rearing responsibilities for a number of pond produced species of fish, as well as assisting in daily intensive production of the Indiana muskellunge fingerling program. Duties will include, but are not limited to, monitoring pond water chemistry, collecting and analyzing zooplankton samples, feeding fish, measuring growth, observing fish behavior, daily cleaning of indoor production tanks, inventorying fish, harvesting ponds, and stocking of fish throughout Indiana’s public waters.
This position is routinely involved in basic property maintenance as needed. Which may include, grounds landscaping (push mowing and tractor mowing, weed eating, brush pick-up, etc.), sweeping parking lot areas, picking up trash, cleaning restrooms, and other duties as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to routinely lift objects weighing 50 pounds or more
- Ability to work independently when needed and properly instructed
- Ability to work well on a team and get along with supervisors and other employees
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and communicate clearly
- Ability to work outdoors in hot or cold weather extremes for extended periods
QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license. Preference will be given to currently enrolled college students or recent graduates who were enrolled in a fisheries curriculum (completing courses such as ecology, fisheries management, limnology, aquaculture, aquatic biology, and/or any other related fields of study).
