Seasonal Surveyor

The Central Michigan Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CM-CISMA) is seeking a Seasonal Invasive Species Technician to perform surveys and mapping of Black Swallow-wort, as well as other terrestrial, aquatic, and emergent species.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct invasive species surveys on foot, as a vehicular passenger, and or by kayak/canoe
- Collect field data using datasheets, GPS units, hand-drawn field maps, and the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) app
- Assist with the development of invasive species inventory maps and management plans related to invasive species found during surveys
- Obtain property owner permissions to enter private property for the purpose of conducting surveys
- Correspond with private land owners to raise awareness of invasive species that may be discovered on their property
- Participate in outreach events including boat washes, landing blitzes, fairs, and other events
- Data entry into the online MISIN Treatment Tracking geo-database and the CM-CISMA’s ArcGIS Map
Skills and Eligibility Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in botany, biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field is preferred but not required depending on experience
- Experience identifying Michigan native and invasive plant species
- Must exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills when working with any and all demographics
- Must hold a valid driver's license, have a good driving record, and a reliable vehicle
- Must be highly accountable, as solo field work for surveys will be a regular part of the job
- Must be able and comfortable to work outdoors in remote areas and on office projects
- Must be reliable, have a history of strong organizational skills, and an exceptional work ethic
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite programs
- Experience with ArcMap, or similar GIS software
Terms and Benefits:
- Pay Rate: $15 - $17 per hour, commensurate with experience
- Primary duty location in Mt. Pleasant and or Gladwin, MI; travel across a five-county area will be required
- This is a full-time seasonal position, working 40 hours per week
- Preferred start date is May 26th and would run until about the end of August
Other Considerations:
- Field work will take place in all weather conditions, and will likely involve contact with stinging insects and hazardous plants
- Must be able to work flexible hours; work days are generally 8-hour days, with occasional evenings or weekends required
- Travel using personal vehicle will be required, with mileage reimbursed at the federal rate
- Must be willing to travel across a five-county area as needed to complete work assignments
- Experience piloting a kayak/canoe, knowing how to swim, and being well versed in river safety are desired
- Use of personal smartphone is required
