We are looking for a passionate outdoor recreationalist/ environmentalist to work on our trail crew this summer. This is a wonderful opportunity to work in a historic setting at a much-loved nature preserve on Mount Desert Island. The Trail Crew Member is primarily responsible for performing all aspects of trail construction, trail maintenance and trail restoration at the Little Long Pond natural lands in Seal Harbor, Maine. The Trail Crew Member will work alongside the Lands and Trails crew (3) and will be primarily focused on the David & Neva Trail and Jordan Stream Path, which are part of the Mount Desert Hiking Trail System (recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places).

This position works under the supervision of the Natural Lands Director and will also support, as needed, special projects occurring on the ~1,200-acre Little Long Pond natural lands. This is a seasonal non-exempt (hourly) position, up to 40 hours per week (max 570 hours, 4-5 months depending on weekly schedule). Flexible scheduling is required due to weather and possible weekend work. The ideal term of work is ~ late May through the second week of September 2021(~35 hours/week), however shorter terms (June-August) will be considered. This is a physically demanding job; the Trail Crew Member is expected to work hard and take pride in their craftmanship.

The Land & Garden Preserve is a nonprofit organization located in Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor, Maine. The mission of the Preserve is to share the beauty of historic lands and gardens on Mount Desert Island. The Preserve manages the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden, Asticou Azalea Garden, and Thuya Garden, as well as Little Long Pond and over 1,400 acres of natural lands. Housing for the Trail Crew Member is not available.

Essential Job Functions:

• Assist in all aspects of trail construction including bench cutting, cribbing, corridor clearing, etc.
• Building with stone including steps, cribbing, check steps, cross drains, steppingstones and retaining
walls. All associated prep work: cutting, shaping, and safely moving stone. We do not use mortar.
• Duties will include, but are not limited to, removing roots, making/transporting crush/soil, building with stone, digging borrow pits, assisting with highline and other rigging.
• Ensure that workspaces and tool storage are kept organized and clean.
• Minimize impact to surrounding natural resources including controlling storm water and soil erosion, etc.
• Safety of all staff and visitors is paramount - adhere to all applicable OSHA safety standards.
• Interact with all staff and guests (visitors, members, and board directors) in a friendly and professional manner. Be knowledgeable about frequently asked questions about the Little Long Pond natural lands and the Land & Garden Preserve.
• Assist with other projects throughout the Preserve as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Passion for natural areas management, conservation, hiking and trail building.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., kneel, bend, and perform physical tasks.
• Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions for up to 8 hours per day.
• Ability to operate a variety of hand tools and small equipment, shovel, rake, trowel, sprayer, pruner. Ability to work independently and closely with the Natural Lands Director and other Land Stewards
• Experience with trail building is preferred.
• Knowledge of environmental issues, local flora, and fauna preferred.
• Experience working outdoors conducting physically demanding work is preferred
