Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) is seeking an experienced SENIOR FISHERIES SCIENTIST to join our team in Portland, OR.
The Senior Fisheries Scientist will lead and manage scientific studies on salmon ecology, fish habitat, fish-forestry interactions, and habitat restoration ensuring accurate data analysis and effective implementation of objectives, tasks, supervision of staff, and budgets. This position will contribute to developing innovative initiatives and large-scale projects that advance CFS's mission to deliver impactful, science-based solutions for fisheries, forestry, and natural resource management.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide specialized technical analysis and counsel directly to clients.
- Lead and oversee all aspects of project work, including scoping, implementation, data analysis, and reporting.
- Develop new project opportunities with existing and new funding sources (clients).
- Foster business development by maintaining and expanding client relationships to secure profitable projects staffed by CFS personnel.
- Manage project budgets and communicate regularly with administrative staff and clients.
- Oversee and review project tasks of scientists and specialists.
- Supervise junior staff including biologists, foresters, and technicians.
- Representing CFS at scientific conferences, delivering presentations to increase awareness of our mission and activities.
- Publish papers in leading scientific journals.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in fisheries, biology, or a related science field required, PhD in a science-related discipline preferred.
- At least 15 years of experience in designing, implementing, managing, completing and multiple applied studies related to Pacific salmon and steelhead and their freshwater or estuarine habitats post master's degree.
- Extensive knowledge and expertise in fisheries science and/or aquatic restoration, steam and estuarine ecology with the versatility to manage a variety of relevant projects.
- Experience collaborating with State, Federal, Tribal, and Industry partners.
- Ability to write grants/proposals to obtain funding fisheries, habitat, or restoration projects.
- Demonstrated ability to acquire and lead complex, dynamic fisheries projects.
- Published co-author of peer-reviewed articles on fisheries or aquatic science issues.
- Strong organizational, delegation, and communication skills, with a focus on transparency and accountability.
- Ability to balance scientific expertise with management and business acumen to deliver practical, cutting-edge solutions.
- Proven ability to mentor, manage and develop team members, leveraging individual strengths, experience working in a collaborative Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) culture is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
- A valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficiency in clear verbal, written, and electronic communication with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to work in aquatic environment including working from a boat platform, swimming and wading in rivers and streams.
- Ability to work effectively in inclement weather, including hot, cold, rainy, and fog conditions, including ability to drive in such conditions.
- Ability to travel 10-40% of the time to different project sites and CFS offices.
COMPENSATION:
Salary: $110,000 - $170,000 (depending on experience)
