Each year, the Sierra Nevada Alliance places 20+ AmeriCorps members with partner conservation organizations throughout the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. During their terms of service, members restore and monitor impaired Sierra watersheds, educate local residents and visitors on environmental issues, and recruit and manage volunteers for a variety of programs. SNAP members gain skills and technical training, are mentored by outstanding environmental leaders, and provide a meaningful contribution to the communities of the Sierra Nevada.

Position Title: Nursery Technician

Organizational Background:

Sequoia Riverlands Trust (SRT) is a regional, non-profit land trust dedicated to conserving the natural and agricultural legacy of the southern Sierra Nevada and San Joaquin Valley. Our mission is to conserve the lands and waters of California’s heartland. To do so, SRT engages landowners, farmers, conservationists, business partners, and governmental agencies to collaborate on land conservation throughout our region. We are a diverse land trust – we have a staff of dedicated professionals that work on land protection, stewardship, education, and local and state policy.

For over 20 years, SRT has worked to protect over 43,000 acres of natural and agricultural lands across nine counties in southern California, including Tulare, Fresno, Merced, Kings, Kern, San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, and Inyo counties. Over 4,000 acres of this land is permanently protected native habitat in the form of seven nature preserves located within Tulare County. The wealth, productivity, and beauty of this land inspire our work to conserve it for the prosperity and enjoyment of future generations.

In addition to conservation, SRT is dedicated to engaging people of all ages from the local community. By providing hands-on volunteer opportunities to schools and the general public, SRT instills a lasting bond between the community and the land, fostering a greater appreciation for stewardship and conservation.

Member Service Plan Overview and Outcomes:

The Member will be trained in native plant nursery operations, including multiple methods of plant propagation (seed, cuttings, division), seed collecting, and good practices for nursery hygiene. The Member will also assist with ongoing care and maintenance of young nursery plants by watering, pruning, transplanting, and weeding. The Member will also direct volunteers in performing the above tasks and assist with quality control.

Required Qualifications:  

• Willingness to serve a Tuesday-Saturday schedule, which could change to take advantage of community outreach opportunities
• Driver’s license and proof of insurance
• Ability to walk on uneven terrain, carry moderately heavy loads of 50-60 lbs, serve outdoors, perform strenuous labor with hand tools, and withstand high (over 100°) temperatures and poor air quality. 
• Willingness to serve long days in the field on occasion (up to 10 hours) and use hand tools and motorized equipment (e.g. line trimmers)  
• Ability to serve independently and part of a team
• Must be reliable, able to follow directions, maintain a positive and professional attitude at all times, dress appropriately for office and field service 
• Must be well organized, efficient and possess good time management skills 
• Must be creative, resourceful, and possess the ability to adapt to changing circumstances quickly 
• Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel, Gmail, and Google Calendar 

Desired Qualifications: 

• Background or coursework in horticulture, landscaping, or a related field.
• Experience with field data collection and monitoring.
• Strong written communication skills.
• Ability to follow detailed data collection protocols.
• Self-motivated and able to take initiative.
• Interest in conservation and aquatic habitat restoration.
• Comfortable working in remote field settings.
• Interest in learning about native plant propagation or similar natural resource career​s
• Basic understanding and experience with power equipment

By providing hands-on, outdoor educational opportunities to schools and the general public, SRT facilitates instrumental and purposeful educational programs that instill a lasting bond between the community and the land, fostering a greater appreciation for stewardship and conservation. From providing field trips at our nature preserves; hands-on, work-based learning internships for high school students; regular community outreach and volunteer opportunities for the general public; and more, our staff aims to cultivate a sense of connection between humans and nature and foster a sense of stewardship in the community for years to come.

Organizational/2025-2026:

SRT works with a number of local schools and teachers to lead K-12 students on field trips at SRT preserves. The Member will support the program by developing and implementing quality outdoor educational curriculum and hands-on activities, both during the school day and during SRT’s year-long afterschool programs. The member will support with planning and logistics for these field trips, including supporting with scheduling, transportation requests, and delivering lessons.

SRT has two year-long high school internship programs focused on providing relevant hands-on opportunities to students across Tulare County. Curriculum for these programs evolves annually to support student interests, promote student engagement and leadership, increase program relevancy to the real world, and support needs identified by the SRT Conservation Department. The Member will support the Education Coordinator in implementing these programs by using work-based learning, service learning, and project-based learning strategies to provide interns with multiple opportunities to gain knowledge and skills through SRT or other local partner organizations. The member will support curriculum creation and delivery, track program attendance and other relevant data, give pre- and post-surveys before and after activities, and reach out to interns and school staff to set up on-campus and off-campus meetings.

Required Qualifications:  

• Willingness to frequently serve a Monday-Saturday schedule to accommodate weekend events
• Driver’s license, proof of insurance, a reliable vehicle, and willingness to drive it for projects that are off-site, sometimes for long distances (mileage is reimbursed ​by Host at the federal rate)
• Ability to walk on uneven terrain, carry moderately heavy loads of 50-60 lbs, serve outdoors, perform strenuous labor with hand tools, and withstand high (over 100°) temperatures and poor air quality. Poison oak is common in many of our field sites.

The ability to learn land navigation and GPS skills

• Willingness to serve long days in the field on occasion (up to 10 hours) and use hand tools and motorized equipment (e.g. line trimmers)  
• Willingness to apply herbicide to invasive plants with training 
• Ability to serve independently and part of a team
• Must be reliable, able to follow directions, maintain a positive and professional attitude at all times, dress appropriately for office and field service 
• Must be well organized, efficient and possess good time management skills 
• Must be creative, resourceful, and possess the ability to adapt to changing circumstances quickly 
• Excellent written and oral communication skills 
• Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel, Gmail, and Google Calendar 

Desired qualifications, but NOT required: 

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or other natural resource field 
• Interest in learning about habitat restoration, invasive species management, native plant propagation, or similar natural resource career​s
• Prior experience in land management, ecological restoration, field biology, agriculture, or related fields
• Basic understanding and experience with power equipment
