Seed Savers Exchange is a nonprofit organization based in Decorah, Iowa, dedicated to conserving and promoting America’s culturally diverse but endangered garden and food crop heritage for future generations.

Primary Role:

The Social Media & Engagement Coordinator leads the day-to-day planning, creation, publishing, and engagement for Seed Savers Exchange’s social media channels and will also support our podcast through promotion and editing. This role uses storytelling, photography, video, and community interaction to grow awareness, deepen audience engagement, support revenue goals, and connect more people to seed saving, gardening, and the mission of Seed Savers Exchange.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, create, schedule, and publish social media content across Seed Savers Exchange channels.
  • Maintain a social media content calendar aligned with seasonal garden moments, campaigns, events, product promotions, member/donor communications, and organizational priorities.
  • Create social-first content, including captions, short-form videos, reels, photography, stories, and posts.
  • Capture photo and video content at Heritage Farm, including gardens, events, staff, visitors, crops, seeds, and behind-the-scenes work.
  • Repurpose content from the catalog, blog, podcast, emails, events, and educational materials into engaging social media posts.
  • Edit podcast episodes and support their promotion across digital channels by creating short-form clips, episode graphics, audiograms, captions, and other related social media content.
  • Monitor and engage with comments, direct messages, tags, mentions, and user-generated content in a timely and mission-aligned way.
  • Help grow and nurture Seed Savers Exchange’s online community of gardeners, members, customers, seed savers, educators, partners, and influencers.
  • Track and report social media performance.
  • Stay informed about social media trends, platform updates, best practices, accessibility, and emerging tools.
  • Assist with marketing campaigns, events, and other communications projects as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Job Share:

  • Contribute to broader organizational goals through participation in fieldwork and/or order fulfillment during peak times

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience creating content for social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, and/or Pinterest.
  • Experience with short-form video, photography, caption writing, and basic graphic design.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Audacity, or other media editing software.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences and platforms.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, mission-driven, gardening, food, farming, education, or cultural organization preferred.
  • Knowledge of or desire to learn about gardening, horticulture, heirloom seeds, and seed saving.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, marketing, or equivalent years’ experience working in the communication or education field. 
  • Proven track record of writing to inform and engage the audience, editing content for clarity and accuracy, as well as a record of organization and delivery on tasks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to sit and stand for long periods at a computer.
  • Able to navigate SSE’s farmland for photo/story opportunities.
