One Hundred Miles (OHM) is dedicated to protecting and preserving Georgia's 100-mile coast through advocacy, education, and citizen engagement. We make progress toward our mission because we are inclusive of all friends and residents of Georgia's coast. We emphasize collaboration with conventional and unconventional conservation allies and celebrate our coast and the stories of the people working to protect it. OHM is a trusted resource and conservation leader across our coast and throughout the country.

The South Coast Advocate (SCA) will advocate for environmental conservation policies for the coast by organizing community members to advance and/or change public policy and resource allocation decisions made by governments that impact the South Coast. The SCA will ensure local decisions accommodate coastal population growth and address sea level rise while protecting wildlife, people, and culture throughout the South Coast counties (Glynn, Camden, Brantley, and other counties as needed.)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead programmatic advocate in creating and implementing South Coast campaigns to achieve organizational strategic goals.
  • Develop initiatives and campaigns to help citizens on the South Coast to engage in planning and policy decisions that effectively address development and coastal hazards that can harm the environment and community health.
  • Attend city and county meetings (usually in the evenings) to stay updated on local government decisions affecting the natural and built environment in the South Coast counties.
  • Analyze how city and county policy changes and development may negatively affect the South Coast and create a campaign that may remove or lessen those impacts.
  • Support community-led initiatives and develop new partnerships with businesses, corporations, other organizations, and neighborhood groups to advocate for growth management policies and practices that protect coastal people and wildlife.
  • Work with media outlets and social networks to raise awareness about OHM projects within the South Coast.
  • As needed, assisting the CEO/President and Vice President of Coastal Conservation with lobbying efforts and federal campaigns.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Must have a bachelor's degree and or three years of experience in planning, organizing, or conservation advocacy
  • Must have experience working or volunteering with environmental or historic conservation efforts, grassroots organizing, campaign building and strategizing, or policymaking and social justice or environmental justice efforts
  • Ability to work constructively and creatively in a team atmosphere internally and externally
  • Ability to think through issues and create an appropriate strategy to support or oppose an issue
  • Demonstrated experience working independently
  • Ability to work under stress and in situations with conflict
  • Ability to accept criticism from outside the organization and get constructive feedback from within the organization
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Excellent computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office 365 and shared file software, including Dropbox
  • Experience using presentation software
HOW TO APPLY

This full-time position is based along Georgia's coast, with occasional remote work a possibility. This position will require the employee to work evenings attending meetings and events and requires some travel to communities across the Georgia coast. Must be an advocate at heart, appreciate the uniqueness of Georgia's coastal environment and its communities and cultures, have a passion for justice, and have an interest in community planning and environmental conservation.
