The Habitat and Population Evaluation Team (HAPET) is a unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System that serves U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Regions 3 (Midwest) and 6 (Mountain Prairie). HAPET is hiring a spatial ecologist with experience working with waterfowl, other migratory birds, and/or wetlands. This is a great opportunity to work on projects that directly impact continental waterfowl conservation, inform decision making, and highlight strategic habitat conservation efforts in the USFWS. The position may be filled at the GS12 or GS13 level and will be based in Bismarck, ND.

Some of the duties of the position will include:

• Development and application of spatially-explicit and statistical models that link biological parameters with landscape characteristics to create decision-support tools and prioritization metrics that guide conservation delivery.
• Management and manipulation of large datasets in R and potentially other software programs to answer complex ecological questions.
• Leadership and expertise in managing complex, field-based and data aggregation projects that collect new or use existing data to address natural resource issues, with an emphasis on waterfowl and wetlands.
• Effective written, visual, and verbal communication methods with peers and cooperators to relay information pertinent to projects, analysis, modeling outcomes, and spatial information systems (e.g., reporting, peer-reviewed publications, technical and population presentations).
• Representation of the USFWS in meetings with managers and biologists from various federal, state, and non-government organizations; serving on the technical committee of various Joint Ventures and other groups; participating in regional and national teams, working groups, and other initiatives to further the missions of HAPET, the NWR System, and the USFWS.
