The Resource Assistants Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers. You must be:

  • a U.S. citizen or legal resident.

Position Description: 

The position is designed to orient and develop a trainee in the field of natural resources and associated activities such as recreation, scenery/interpretation, wilderness, wilderness trails, and special land uses. This position will focus on processing minor special land l uses including filming research, and short term recreation activities. This position is not virtual. Major Duties involve performing and completing developmental assignments that support broad natural resource functions intended to expand the employee’s understanding of concepts, underlying principles, and program requirements. Work assignments provide the trainee opportunities to communicate  with the public regarding the agency's management practices, program information, rules, and regulations. 

Responsibilities:

  • Works with Federal and local law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with federal laws, reporting all identified violations of law or regulations 
  • Convey Special Uses Screening Criteria, Forest Service Handbook/Manual, Forest Plans, and the Code of Federal Regulations to permit applicants, ensuring compliance 
  • Work with skilled technicians and professionals to: 
    • Learn and use various information databases that monitor recreation resources program activities

    • Process special use applications

    • Perform on-the-ground investigations for site suitability inspections

    • Administer special authorization for recreation events, concessionaire operations, and special use permits

  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Major studies relevant to this position: environmental science, social science, biology

  • Customer service, special uses or similar permitting experience, strong writing skills, and experience with interpreting policy
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey program information to the public and permit applicants
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills to process permits, update databases, and handle administrative tasks such as billing
  • Ability to work collaboratively with skilled technicians, professionals, and stakeholders, as well as interact effectively with permittees and law enforcement agencies
  • Willingness to learn, take on new challenges, and contribute to a team environment, as well as the ability to work independently when necessary
  • Some positions may require the ability to perform fieldwork in outdoor environments, including hiking, navigating rough terrain, and conducting site inspections
